Megadeth has released its self-titled final studio album, which features a bonus cover of Metallica's classic track Ride the Lightning. The song was originally written by Megadeth founder Dave Mustaine, who helped craft it during his time with the band from 1983 to 1985 before departing amid tensions. Mustaine has stated that the cover is a gesture of respect for former bandmates James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, describing it as a way to close the circle on his history with Metallica.
In light of plans to retire Megadeth following a three- to five-year farewell tour supporting the album,Mustaine has seen covering the iconic song as an opportunity to pay tribute. However, tensions have resurfaced between Mustaine and Hetfield/ Ulrich over royalty disputes involving earlier recordings such as Metallica's No Life ''Til Leather demo. Despite these challenges, Mustaine remains hopeful that one day the rift between them will be resolved.
