Biography

In 1995, when the Doom/Death group Aeolashrymae split up, three new groups were born from its ashes: Susurrus Inanis, Nothing and Agalloch. Initially, the two co-founders of Agalloch (J. Haughm and S. Breyer) intend to create an epic dark metal rich in atmospheres. In 1996, they composed a few songs and a second guitarist, L. Anderson, joined them.
The first demo From Which Of This Oak was released in 1997 and shortly thereafter, bassist J. William W. arrived. The band then signed with The End Records and entered the studio in 1999 to record its first album, Pale Folklore. The band is very well perceived with this folk-aesthetic album, and continues its efforts with the MCD Of Stone, Wind and Pilor released in 2001. This compilation of new songs includes a cover of the English folk band Sol Invictus, Kneel to The Cross. As early as 2002, the band returned with a second album entitled The Mantle , a wonder of dark and desperate atmospheres.
But it takes four long years, interspersed with a few EPs, before Ashes Against the Grain is finally released in August 2006. This album leaves out the acoustic guitar very present on The Mantle and focuses on elements with more "Metal" features by favoring electric guitar, which gives the album a different sound. February 2008, Agalloch released The White EP, the second half of the EP directed for Vendlus Records. This is a collection of Dark Folk / Ambient, work done between 2004 and 2007 this EP was only published in 2000 copies. In 2008, the group published The Demonstration Archive 1996–1998 , a compilation of material recorded between 1996 and 1998 from From Which of This Oak , the then unpublished Of Stone, Wind and Pillor and their 1998 promotional record. Marrow of the Spirit, released in November 2010. In late 2013, the band announced that it had started working on a new album, which was released in May 2014: The Serpent&The Sphere .
