Akercocke
Biography
The band formed in 1997 at the initiative of Jason Mendonca (guitar/song) and David Gray (battery), two friends who played together in Salem Orchid. They quickly recruited Paul Scanlan (guitar) and Peter Theobalds (bass) and released a first self-produced album, Rape of the Bastard Nazarene in 1999. It was a great success and allowed the band to win a deal with Peaceville Records. In 2001, a second album entitled The Goat of Mendes was released, followed in 2003 by Choronzon, this time at Earache Records. Shortly thereafter, Scanlan was fired for Matt Wilcock (ex-The Berzerker). Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone comes out in 2005 and is acclaimed by critics, the group becoming one of the leaders of the world Black/Death scene and making more and more talk about him about his satanic beliefs and his use of businessman-style costumes on stage. A great tour across Europe with Mortician and Blood Red Throne will follow the release of the album, and will be a great success. Nevertheless Peter Benjamin replaced Theobalds shortly afterwards. Antichrist, fifth album of the band, landed in 2007 and thus marked the end of the contract between the band and Earache Records.
