Anti Flag
Biography
Anti-Flag is a band native to Pittsburgh, they make themselves known in 1993 by playing on a local radio. At that time, Anti-Flag was formed by Justin Sane, Andy Flag and Pat Thetic. The name group contains a mistake since there is normally no dash, but they chose to keep it after being reported. They released several albums including North America Suck and a split with God Squad. In 1996 they released the album Die For The Government, of which they sold 20,000 copies. In 1997, they played the first part of UK Subs , The Exploited and Circle Jerks as well as a tour on the East Coast that was marked by Andy Flag's departure, which was later replaced by Chris Head and Chris #2.
The silver collected with the release of Their System Doesn't Work For You in 1998 allows them to base their own label, A-F Records, on which they will release A New Kind Of Army a year later. In 2000, Anti-Flag joined the Fat Wreck Chords label on which the Underground Network album was released in 2001, developing a more melodic style compared to the punk/hardcore old school of their debut and seeing bass player Chris#2 more share the microphone with Justin Sane. At the end of 2001, they returned to the studio to record Mobilize, EP composed of filmed and live songs, which landed in 2002 on A-F Records. The year 2002 will also be the occasion to record a split with Buncing Souls.
The group released its most committed opus the following year, entitled The Terror State and showing a child soldier on the cover. Anti-Flag has always been politically engaged, all the more so with the arrival of George W. Bush as President of the United States. They were among the first to insurgent against the war in Iraq, which will give them a bad reputation in American society and difficulties in the distribution of their albums as well as in the programming of concert halls on the ground of Uncle Sam. The group was criticized for its lack of patriotism, their name not making things right. They say, however, that they are not anti-American, but simply disagree with the country's policy. Their live performances of the tour promoting The Terror State will be compiled and will form the DVD live, Death of a Nation , released in 2004.
The signing of a contract with Major RCA marks a turning point in their career as it divides fans and generates many criticisms against them. They say they chose this option to allow as many people as possible to have access to their music. For Blood and Empire released in 2005 and shows Anti-Flag still as committed and angry against Bush and neo-conservatives. A tragic incident within the group ( Chris#2's sister was murdered) led to the release of a new EP (retaining novels and live titles) whose funds will be paid to an association: A Benefit For Victims of Violent Crimes. The Bright Lights of America was born in 2008, produced by Tony Visconti (the famous producer of David Bowie).
Following a mixed welcome from the public and a desire to return to an environment that suits them more, Anti-Flag returned in 2009 to the world of independent labels by signing at Side One Dummy to release The People Or The Gun, an album with which the band found the punk rock he had abandoned with Bright Lights Of America.
