Biography

Arctic Monkeys, it's four little guys of barely twenty years old on average that are the Anglo-Saxon sensation of the moment. The story begins when Turner and Cook, friends of a High Green high school (in the Sheffield suburb) both ask for a guitar at Christmas. The two boys had no musical experience, but decided to set up a band with Nicholson and Helders in 2003. In doing so, they strive to learn the tubes of the Whites Stripes and The Vines by heart as training. In June 2003, the band made its first concert in Sheffield, and with efforts and demos broadcast on the net, they were noticed by Domino Records, and signed in spring 2004. The British press as well as Radio 1 do not praise these new Libertines, and their appearance at the Leeds and Reading Festival in August 2005 confirm their growing popularity. In May 2005, the band released its first EP, Five Minutes with Arctic Monkeys, limited to 1500 copies, but also available as a download on iTunes. October 2005 sees the premises of a staggering future career: the band fills the Astoria of London, and will thus have 2,000 people singing to the head absolutely all their songs, while they only have an EP of 5 songs and a single in pocket. Finally, in January 2006, their first opus, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not released. Announced for January 30, the album will finally be advanced by a week, officially due to the pressing demand of the public (officially because all the tracks were already present on the peer-2-peer). The group's popularity is confirmed: 363,735 copies are sold in England the first week! Never seen, especially since the album was already available for a long time via the peer-2-peer. In addition to questioning the laws on illegal download, Arctic Monkeys enter directly into the history of the English record industry (as the best sellers for a first record), and intend to make them talk about it again. Favourite Worst Nightmare , their second album, is released at the end of April 2007, a week after the first single Brianstorm , allowing them to continue to collect prices everywhere (USA, Ireland, Japan, ...) and to take first place in album and single sales in England. A series of concerts followed, until the 3rd Humburg album. This record, recorded in 2 sessions (12 tracks with Josh Man of the Queens of the Stone Age in 2008 and 12 with James Ford in 2009), is gradually revealed during their previous tour (Crying Lightning , Dangerous Animals or Potion Approaching ) until a release in 2009. The musicians admit to listening to Cream , Nick Cave or Jimi Hendrix during the composition phases (which is felt on the atmosphere of the various tracks). The single Crying Lightning was released in early July, followed by others until early 2010. Similarly, the quartet runs concerts and festivals (Reading and Leeds, Osheaga, All Points West Music and Arts Festival) until the end of April. The combo then focuses on the composition of its 4th opus, Suck It and See , later recorded between 2010 and 2011. The first single, Brick By Brick, reveals the new sound of Arctic Monkeys, followed by Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair. We must wait until June of the same year to be able to listen to Suck It and See . Line-Up : Alex Turner – singing / guitar / keyboards (since 2002) Jamie Cook – guitar / piano (since 2002) Matt Helders – battery (since 2002) Nick O'Malley – bass (since 2006)
