Biography

Black Sabbath is certainly one of the most notable bands for all metal, already registered in the pantheon of rock this band revolutionized the music and launched in the early 1970s several bombs whose tremors are still felt 35 years later. At the end of the 1960s, the wave of hippies has just passed its climax and new formations inspired by blues and rock tones add to the sound, saturated the guitars and changing the register level message. Led Zeppelin , Deep Purple and many others trace the guideline of the coming rock years, Black Sabbath takes the darkest and most unhealthy path of all. Where Led Zeppelin chooses sex, drugs and rock-roll and psyched flights Black Sabbath plunge into depressive and macabre. The members, childhood friends, begin under the name Polka Tulk then Earth and finally early 1969 after several concerts in Europe decide to opt for Black Sabbath (title of a news by Dennis Wheatley), name that will mark the history of rock... The band was noticed in concert and signed in 1969 by Philips Records, in 1970, the first album by Black Sabbath , an eponymous album that will become a cult. First released in England this record manages to enter the top 10 English but will explode in the American charts a few months later and stay there for more than a year (year in which more than one million records will be sold in the USA) while the critic casts the band. The same year the band released Paranoïd , the album released almost at the same time as the first one in the USA but this does not prevent sales and the album becomes number 1 and flows to 4 million copies (again in the USA) and remains the most sold album of the band. The Black Sabbath machine in a year has shaken rock, tracks like Iron Man , Paranoid , NIB , Evil Woman mark an entire generation and still remains incredibly current tracks. The band then followed the album releases at an incredible rate, 8 albums were released between 1970 and 1978; After Black Sabbath, Paranoid followed Master Of Reality (1971), Black Sabbath, vol. 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973, first album where the keyboard is officially present with Rick Wakeman from Yes), Saboté (1975, after a year to white the band returns with an album that no longer works as well in the USA where the musical landscape has changed), We Sold Our Soul for Rock 'n' Roll (where the band began to make more and more significant changes on its compositions under the influence of Iommi (guitar) while Ozzy Osbourne opposed), Technical Ecstasy (1976, which went further in the innovations desired by Iommi sells well but less than the previous ones, Ozzy Osbourne then decided to leave the band which was then replaced for some time by Dave Walker of Savoy Brown), Never Say Die! (1978, with Ozzy Osbourne singing, the last before his return in the 1990s; Never Say Die! is not a commercial success and Osbourne leaves the band (personal problem, drugs, musical divergence, ... the reasons are great). For some the story Black Sabbath stops in 1979 with the departure of Ozzy Osbourne who will then continue a solo career. The coming years are a real TV show for Black Sabbath, the members succeed each other, in total in the history of Black Sabbath more than thirty changes, line up meeting will be made (sometimes for one evening only), we will focus only on the most notable changes (a complete list is available black-sabbath.com). The band after the departure of Ozzy Osbourne hires Ronnie James Dio ( Rainbow ) and takes its time before releasing in 1980 Heaven And Hell, the band then revives with success, a live (recorded with Ozzy ) released at the same time: Black Sabbath Live at Last. Bill Ward (battery) left Black Sabbath because of a health problem and was replaced by Vinnie Appice. In 1981 the band with more than two original members recorded Mob Rules also a success. The next album will be a live album, but Dio and Iommi don't hear on the mix and Dio leaves Black Sabbath but Live Evil is released in 1983. Bill Ward then returned to the band for a little while and Dio was replaced by Ian Gillian, former singer of Deep Purple. This line up recorded Born Again in 1983, which was a mixed success, and Ian Gillian left the band. In 1985 for a unique concert (Live Aid) Ozzy Osbourne returned to singing. Geezer Butler left the band in 1985 and was left with Tony Iommi, who released a solo album in 1986 but under the name Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi: Seventh Star. The line up for this release is then: Glenn Hughes (another Deep Purple singer), David Spitz (bass), Geoff Nichols (keyboard), Eric Singer (beater, though with a name like that...) and of course Iommi. The album is a semi-failure and the band will not last long. Iommi alone at the command of Black Sabbath releases a new album: The Eternal Idol in 1987 which continues the descent into the charts of Black Sabbath, with the song Tony Martin, the bass and the drums are then held by Bob Daisley and Bev Bevan. After a few changes of line up the group exits Headless Cross (1989) and Tyre (1990). In 1992 Dehumanizer , an album featuring line-up from 1978 to 1983 (Geezer Butler, Ronnie James Dio, Vinnie Appice and Iommi) was released, and this album is back to success. Ozzy Osbourne must then join the band but it will only be an announcement effect. The following albums will bring together some members of the different line-up, Cross Purpose in 1994 (with Martin singing), Forbidden (1995 with Martin singing again) but Black Sabbath is then a poor salesman... In 1996 the band's first best of released (The Sabbath Stones ), 26 years after their debut, it changes best of released after 5 albums... The line up of 1970 meets for a live album called Reunion which exceeds one million copies sold. The band then plans to release a new album with the line up of 1970 but nothing will come out of the sessions with Rick Rubin, the band turns and makes the Ozzfest, but apart from some live or best of nothing new has been released since 1995, however we still talk about a possible album... For fans of Black Sabbath's first period a set of the first 8 albums, remastered and in miniaturized vinyl pouches, was released, a boon for those who discovered them 30 years later. Black Sabbath made its big return in 2013 with... 13 , bringing together the three Ozzy, Iommi and Butler looters, augmented by Brad Wilk (RATM ) behind the drums. 13 is generally well received by the press and fans, without being a total return to the sources the album benefits from a solid production and in the air of time. Veterans travel around the world to defend 13 and fill all the rooms and stadiums in which they pass. In 2015 it will be mentioned a time a new realization of the group, but in the end it will be an EP that will see the beginning of 2016. The End contains 4 tracks from the sessions of 13 as well as 4 live titles. This recording is a will since Black Sabbath announces its firm intention to permanently hang up after a new world tour. This will go through our good old country with a performance at Hellfest 2016.
