Boo Yaa Tribe
Biography
Boo-Yaa Tribe is an American Hip Hop group made up of Devoux brothers from a family from Samoa. Impressive physical boy, they're all gang members in Los Angeles. Yet, behind these mountains of muscles covered with tattoos, there are real musicians who sing, dance and play Funk music in church on Sundays. They are also willing to use classics of the genre in rehearsal. After the death of the younger brother in the late 1980s, the brothers decided to leave the land of the rising sun, fleeing the world of American gangs. In Japan, they return to music and perform on stage under the name The Blue City Crew. The Japanese public is conquered by the stage performances of these giants, integrating dance and Hip-Hop. They decided to return to the United States in 1988 and did not waste any time, they changed their name to Boo-Yaa Tribe, recorded a Coming Hard To America demo and then collaborated with Club Nouveau. In 1990, they released their first album impregnated with funky sounds and entitled "New Funky Nation". Unlike all other Hip-Hop bands, Boo Yaa Tribe plays on real instruments, which makes the album quite interesting and the record is rather well received by critics. The band then collaborated with Faith No More and recorded the title Another Body Murdered on the B.O of the film Judgment Night. The Fusion style is then booming with bands like Red Hot Chile Peppers, Faith No More, or Fishbone. At Lollapalooza 1992, one of the highlights of the festival will be a performance by Anthony Kiedis who sings an entire song on the shoulders of one of the members of Boo-Yaa Tribe. The Samoans then surround George Clinton (Parliaments , Funkadelics , Red Hot Chile Peppers ), Ice Cube (N.W.A ) and Living Colour and record the album Good Times Bad Times which will never be published.
The band then signed Bullet Proof Records and recorded two albums, Doomsday in 1994 and Occupancy Hazardous in 1995. In search of a new sound, Boo-Yaa Tribe decided to create their own label, Samoan Mafia Records and released the album Angry Samoans in 1998. In this disc filled with energy and aggressiveness, the group abandons their funky side to focus on a Rap/Metal style with the image of Cypress Hill, Rage Against The Machine or Body Count. Unfortunately the album goes a little unnoticed despite its high quality. The Devoux brothers then totally switch into the pure and hard Gansta Rap on the last two efforts in dates. First with Mafia Lifestyle in 2000 and especially with West Koastra Nostra released in 2003. The album features Hip Hop sizes such as Eminem , WC , Kokane or B Real ( Cypress Hill ).
Despite a good career, Boo-Yaa Tribe is little known by us. Yet, for many artists in the community, they are pioneers in Gangsta Rap. They are also the first to merge this genre with Metal and Funk and play live instruments, which no Hip-Hop group had done before.
