Some would be categorical. If one were to be retained, that would be the one. Cape N-Jazz. More than a group, an institution, a den, a mandatory passage from the emo nebula. THE point of convergence between the 80s wave and the one emerging in the 1990s. Formed in 89 in Chicago by the Kinsella brothers (Tim and Mike), the combo complements the arrivals of Sam Zurick and Victor Villareal. After many times changing names and integrating Davey Von Bolhen, the quintet emerged from anonymity at the beginning of the 90s. This decade, Cape Nazz will be its cradle. Crossing punk, emo, indie and post-punk. For six years, the band continued the singles, the 7' (two that will be released in 1993), the participations in compilations and led in 1995 to the creation of its first and only album Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards in the Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We've Slipped on and Egg Shells We've Tippy Toed Over more commonly known as Shmap'n Shmazz. In very short time, the disc becomes collector. But the band did not survive and the 5 members split the same year after a final concert at Little Rock's Das Yutes a Go-Go.
The first chapter of Cape Town's life ends. Then start the second. The band's influence on the emo and indie scene is growing and becoming increasingly palpable. We begin to recognize the forerunner side of the group, we copy it, we correctly lick it as the "founding fathers" of the current. The second wave emo then exploded with the general public, in the late 1990s under the impulses of Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World. Cape Nazz was born ten years earlier. A decade ahead. Just that. Jade Tree thus took advantage of the movement and published in 1998 the entire discography of the quintet under the title Analphabetapolothology. Cape Nazz is now a cult. One then sees the birth of a pleiade of young groups that takes names in reference to the titles of Analphabetapolothology: Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Soria, Little League, In The Clear, Oh Messy Life, We Are Scientists. The 5 musicians are not left behind. Suddenly they form new projects: Make Believe , The Promise Ring , American Football , Owls , Joan of Arc , Owen , Ghosts and Vodka to name but the best known. So many successes and outstanding figures. Cape Nazz is eternal.
