Biography

Captain Beefheat / Don Van Vliet / Donald Glen Vliet was born on January 15, 1941 in Glendale, California. At university he makes the decisive meeting of the one who will remain one of his closest friends, Franck Zappa . Both have some bands together but in 1964 Captain will start his own band, the famous Magic Band. The band initially opted for a rather classic rock-tinted blues (on Safe as Milk in 1967) before drifting in a much more barred and experimental style that made the band famous. When Trout Mask Replica came into being in 1969 on Straight Records - the brand new label by Franck Zappa - the audience does not understand and rejects it massively while the critics continue to salute the genius and creativity that the band has shown on this record. Trout Mask Replica was composed in three weeks but will require eight months of fitness. After the release of Lick My Decals Off which is part of the continuity of Trout Mask Replica the band ns no longer Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band but Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. On The Spotlight Kid and Clearspot, the Magic Band took a more conventional and commercial route, to the dreadful Unconditionally Guarented and Blue Jeans and Moonbeams released in 1974 that swims in a consensualism 1000 leagues from what could be expected of Captain and what is then called his Tragic Band. As early as 1978, the group changed at all. Captain Beefheart hires younger musicians, some of whom were long-time fans of the band. It's a real new start, the two albums that will follow his considered as the Captain's great return that takes things back where he left them with Lick My Decals Off. After Ice Cream for Crow in 1982, Captain Beefheart retired from the music scene and devoted himself to Painting. He now lives alone and isolated, and would be affected by rumours (which all his friends refute) of multiple sclerosis.
