Chthonic

Chthonic is a metal band formed by singer Freddy Lim in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1995. In addition to being mostly influenced by black metal and death metal, the frontman adds traditional sounds thanks to his talent for the Asian instrument, the ehrru. The band's beginnings were marked by very frequent line-up changes, which did not prevent Chthonic from leaving Where The Ancestors' Souls Gathered at the end of 1998. After new musicians, the second album released in 2000 with Doris Yeh on bass and Jesse Liu on guitars, two members who will remain in the band's final line-up. After a big turnover at the level of clavierists and drummers, both CJ Kao and Dani Wang were recruited in 2005, just before Seediq Bale, Chthonic's fourth album. It is also at this period that the Taiwanese make themselves known to the Western public. Chthonic takes part in the Ozzfest 2007 and shoots with Nile, Obituary, Cradle Of Filth, or Ensiferum. Bassist Doris Yeh becomes manager and spokesperson of the band (in addition to her role as a musician). As the young woman is also a model, Chthonic is still gaining visibility. In this context, Mirror Of Retribution benefits from an international release, with a Taiwanese sung version and another in English. The following tours are an opportunity for Asians to play with Satyricon and Arch Enemy. Chthonic members are very involved in local politics. The singer Freddy Lim chairs the Taiwanese branch of Amnesty International from 2010 to 2014, while bassist Doris Yeh (who becomes Lim's wife) is involved with the Awekening Foundation, a women's rights support association. Their most committed album released in 2011: Takasago Army tells the true story of Taiwanese troops forced to fight for Japan during World War II. In 2013 appears Bu-Tik which will be followed two years later by Timeless Sentence .
