Biography

Coffins' beginnings are laborious. Formed in 1996 by Yoshiaki, bassist, Aniki, guitarist, and Uchino, drummer in Tokyo, they adopted the name of Coffins and performed their first concert in 1997. The line-up moves a lot, Uchino finally taking the guitar and Yoshikia singing, recruiting You to the futs and Hidai to the bass. But their busy schedules made them throw the sponge away in 2000, having recorded only a simple demo. Uchino and You, however, decided to return the cover in 2003 with a new bassist, Sentou. Initially Doom, they moved to a slow and greasy Death that they fixed on a few demos, including Sacrifice To Evil Spirit that opened the doors to them of the eccentric Dutch label Razorback Recordings, which was mainly interested in original death and grind projects and carried on humor and horrific culture like Ghoul, Frightmare, Impetigo, Lord Gore ...They published their first album, Mortuary In Darkness. Koreeda comes to replace Sentou on bass, and they quickly release The Other Side Of Blasphemy at Imperium Records. Buried Death will come quickly in 2008, this time at 20 buck spin. Their growing reputation allows them to start shooting in the USA and Europe, participating in prestigious festivals such as the Maryland Death Fest, the Obscene Extreme or the famous Roadburn. They also chain splits with Skullhog, Warhammer, Hooded Menace, Stormcrow ... and allow themselves to publish in 2012 Sewage Sludgecore Treatment, an ep of covers of sludge groups like Eyehategod (which they often reprise Sister Fucker), buzzov*en, Iron Monkey, Grief ... In 2013, their reputation was sufficiently established and respected for Relapse to be interested in them and released their fourth album, The Fleshland in 2013. Coffins is today a recognized actor in the Japanese metal scene who can afford to participate in the biggest festivals of the genre like Hellfest in 2015 while keeping a real underground stature, continuing to foam small theaters and squats around the world to broadcast the slow, glaring and groovy death that has made their fame.
