Biography

Coil was a group of industrial and experimental music that practised various forms of music (electronics and others) such as industrial music, noise, ambient and dark atmosphere, neofolk, or minimalism. Industrial, noiseist, the music of Coil is constantly changing, to the point that it is sometimes difficult to recognize the band from one album to another. The band was formed by John Balance (also known as Jhonn Balance) and Peter Christopherson (Sleazy), both of whom left the Psychic TV industry group. Over the course of the albums, the band was able to count on the contributions of Stephen Thrower, Rose McDowell, Drew McDowell, Danny Hyde, William Breeze, Thighpaulsandra and Simon Norris. Cliff Stapelton and Mike York also participated in the live tour of the early 2000s. John Balance suddenly died of a domestic accident on 13 November 2004 at the age of 42, ending the group's career. Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson died on 25 November 2010 at 55 in his home in Bangkok. Avant-garde in many fields, Coil's music comes from many untraditional techniques and sources of inspiration: instrumental transcommunication (EVP or TCI), cut-up, drug use, lucid dream, sidereal sound, granular synthesis, "tide inversions", methods of clairvoyance like John Dee, glitch (voluntary use of sound defects), "SETI synchronization" (synchronization of their studio with the SETI project), chaos theory, etc. We also note the intensive use of traditional or archaic instruments: obsolete synthesizers, photoelectric experimental synthesizers, a Théremine, a Moog synthesizer, electronic shakuhachi. Soft Cell's recapture of Tainted Love would be among other things the first record whose recipes were entirely donated to the British AIDS association Terrence Higgins Trust. Coil also has the interesting habit of separating his work into many alternative projects, publishing music under different names, always changing style. Some of their projects are Elph , Zos Kia , The Eskaton , Black Light District , Time Machines , and one of their newest members, Thighpaulsandra (ex-Spiritualized ) also sings solo. They contributed to the music of two films by Derek Jarman, Blue and The Angelic Conversation, and an alternative version of Hellraiser's soundtrack. Finally, they performed a number of remixes, among others for Nine Inch Nails, including Seven's famous generic music, Closer (Precursor).
