It was in 2001 that the academics Johnny Collins and Max Hellmann formed Controlling the Famous , based their music on their pessimistic perceptions of the Californian cities surrounding them. They soon met Brendan Hughes and Mike Schneider via an announcement on Craigslist, both sharing their vision of Echo Park / Los Angeles and music. Their first EP Maybe It Won't Kill You, But Probably It Might is self-produced while in 2003 they released an EP split with Operatic (under title We are Bounty Hunters for Hire) on Redsand / Redroom Recordings. They will shoot a little with Sparta , Say Anything , The Anniversary ... before laying a third EP, self-produced, put on sale at their concerts and on Smartpunk in 2005. He drew the attention of The Militia Group, which signed them in October of the same year, before distributing the first full length album, Automatic City (recorded by the unbeatable Alex Newport), in May 2006.
After the CD's promotion tour, they announced in the fall that they would like to take a break, and 2 months later reassure their listeners by declaring their intention to start playing again in January 2007.
