Cynic
Biography
Cynic is a progressive death metal band formed in 1987 in Florida at the initiative of Sean Reinert and Paul Masvidal. After several demos and some Line-up changes, the band signed with Roadrunner Records in 1991 and recorded its first album entitled Focus in 1993. While the sound of their first demos was 100% Death Metal, their music evolved into a very complex, experimental and extremely technical form of progressive metal while remaining attached to their death roots while incorporating elements of Jazz music. The clear song is an integral part of this album and Masvidal's choice to vocode his voice reinforces this spatial and dreamlike side of the band's music. Cynic is behind a new breakthrough in Death Metal, a style often reduced to a guttural song. The group then formed the basis of progressive death. Cynic split up at the end of 1994 while the band was working on his second album because of the eternal musical differences. In September 2006, after 12 years of waiting, Paul Masvidal announced that Cynic was recovering. The band decided to release a second album at the French label Season of Mist. The new album, called Traced In Air released in 2008 is a real event in the world of Metal as much as it was expected (the band formed a huge community of fans following the recording of Focus). Resuming the technical, spatial, ethereal and spiritual style of the first album, this 2nd opus makes the style evolve towards more melody and an assumed pop aspect. Acclaimed by critics and the public, this album is a logical continuation of Focus , maturity in addition.
