David Gilmour
Biography
David Gilmour was born in 1946 in Grantchester, near Cambridge, where he later met Syd Barrett during his studies at Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology. They often played guitar together but took different directions. While Barrett founded Rock Experimental Pink Floyd's band in 1965, Gilmour founded Flowers in 1966, a band that toured mainly in Spain and France. In January 1968 David Gilmour was approached by Pink Floyd to assist Syd Barrett, borrowed from a form of schizophrenia due to the use of various drugs. It was in October of the same year that Barrett left the band, leaving room for his childhood friend, David Gilmour. The latter participates in the creation process as soon as he arrives in the band by co-signing A Saucerful of Secrets on the album of the same name.
As early as More in 1969, David Gilmour appeared as the band's centrepiece alongside bass player Roger Waters. But a band could not consist of two strong creative heads and after a period of cohabitation, including Obscured by Clouds , Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here , Roger Waters became more and more familiar with the compositional phase of the band, muzzling David Gilmour who released an eponymous solo album in 1978 to release a little of his creativity. The Wall marked a profound break with the previous Pink Floyd works in 1979 due to the near absence of Gilmour in writing, to the benefit of Waters. The next album, The Final Cut , was entirely composed by the bassist and appeared under the label of a work by Roger Waters played by Pink Floyd . Put on the touch, Gilmour took advantage of it to release his second solo album, About Face , in 1984.
The following year Waters decided to leave Pink Floyd , considering that the group had completed everything it could do. At that time David Gilmour took over and released two last albums with the Floyd: A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell. But in 1995 the Pink Floyd adventure ended and Gilmour began a career as a "man of the shadow" in music by producing various artists, acting as a studio musician or as a sound engineer.
Among the highlights of the decade 1995-2005 was his introduction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, and his induction to the rank of Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his philanthropy and his contribution to music, thereby placing him in the pantheon of the Greats of the world. For Live 8 2005 the Pink Floyd reshaped themselves for a magical concert in Hyde Park. After this concert the best-of sales of the band increased by nearly 1.400%! Gilmour decided to fully pay the profits to Live 8, believing that this money would be more useful to save lives. Then rumors flowed when a possible reformation of the Pink Floyd , but these were quickly denied by David Gilmour who did not see himself again this adventure at his age.
On March 06, 2006 David Gilmour celebrated his 60th birthday and released his first album for more than ten years, On an Island . The record met a great success and reached the head of the charts in many countries, as people did not forget this great gentleman despite a decade spent peacefully apart, but always devoted to music.
