Biography

Deftones is one of the pioneers of neo-metal, like Korn they were the first to really shape the mix between heavy metal and screaming singing and quieter passage with clear singing (sometimes rapped). Formed in the late 1980s in Sacramento, the band was composed of Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Abe Cunningham (battery), and Chino Moreno (chant), Chi Cheng will only join them after a few concerts. Helped by the money collected by Stephen Carpenter after he was hit by a drunk driver the group starts to turn and form its identity. Little by little and thanks to influences such as Faith No More , Rage Against The Machine , Tool , ... the band finds its way and signs on Maverick (the Madonna label) thanks to a 4-track demo. The band entered with Terry Date (who has already produced albums by Soundgarden , Pantera , ...) and released his first album Adrenaline in October 1995. The album does not explode in the charts but thanks to a good word of mouth and eclectic first parts (from Ozzy Osbourne to L7 and of course on Korn) the band manages to sell some 200,000 copies. The release of their second opus (Around The Fur ), which will surf on the wave of success, took place in 1997, a new member then joined the band: Frank Delgado (platinum). In 1999 released a live EP of 7 tracks that will be followed and 1 year later Deftones releases White Pony , one of their most worked album (and with new influences like The Cure ) and also an album that contrasts with the rest of the band's discography, a masterpiece for some however it will be described by many. This does not prevent the success of the album which then begins in 3rd position of the American charts. Chino Moreno then mounts a side project: Team Sleep which will take several years to release its first CD. In 2003 the band returned with an eponymous album that returned to the roots of the band. After the release of a Raretés album, Deftones returned with Saturday Night Wrist in 2006, and then announced Eros for 2009. Unfortunately, fate alters the American predictions because Chi Cheng enters the coma following a car accident. After many months of waiting, Deftones repulsed Eros until an undetermined date and recorded a new opus with the former bassist of Quicksand, Diamond Eyes, which was born in May 2010. During this period, Chi Cheng shows signs of life and slowly recovers, while the rest of the musicians continue to give some concerts. Koi No Yokan , California's seventh studio album released on November 13, 2012, received a lot of positive reviews and ranked 11th in the Billboard U.S charts. On 13 April 2013, despite partial healing and a return home, Chi Cheng died in a hospital in the city of Sacramento after a sudden cardiac arrest, almost four and a half years after the accident in 2008 that left him in a coma. Chino Moreno announced in May that the album Eros , postponed indefinitely after Cheng's accident in 2008, was no longer likely to be published after his death. In 2015 the rumor swells around a return of the Deftones to the foreground, in March they announce that the new opus would probably be available in autumn. During the year they multiply concerts and participations in many festivals.
