Depeche Mode
Biography
The existence of Depeche Mode took root in 1977, when Vince Clarke and Andrew Fletcher formed the No Romance In China group. Two years later Clarke played guitar in The Plan , with Robert Marlow and Paul Langwith while Gore played Norman And The Worms with Philipp Burdett and Gore on guitar. That same year, Marlow, Gore, Clarke and Paul Redmond decided to stage The French Look , combining 2 synthesizers and a guitar with Marlow's song. In March 1980, the first 3 compares formed Composition Of Sound and performed their first concert (with the poster The French Look and Composition Of Sound) in Essex.
After a few instrument changes, Gahan joined Composition Of Sound, which then took the name Depeche Mode (according to a French magazine of the time). The first appearance of the quartet is made on Some Bizzare Album, compilation of the label Some Bizzare, with the song Photographic. During a concert in Canning Town, the musicians were offbeat by Daniel Miller (Founder of Mute Records and Musician) for a first single, "Dreaming Of Me", recorded in December 1980 and climbing to its 57th release in the English charts. "New Life" climbed to 11th place and "Just Can't Get Enough", 3rd single, entered the Top 10. Speak & Spell , first album by Depeche Mode , climbed to 10th place in November 1981, despite a mixed welcome from critics (carried out by Melody Maker and shot down by Rolling Stone ). Unfortunately, during Speak & Spell , Clarke left the band to form Yazoo with Alison Moyet and was replaced by Alan Wilder.
Following a first world tour and numerous singles in 1982, Depeche Mode began recording his second album A Broken Frame the same year, followed by a second tour in September. The following year, Construction Time Again, on which the group worked with producer Gareth Jones, was born. The music looks as more industrial, close to groups like Art Of Noise and Einstürzende Neubauten, while Gore's words move towards a more political and social dimension. Some Great Reward ventured further in September 1984. Concerning sexuality, adulterous relationships or divine justice, it is also the first record that contains a ballad (Somebody) and that enters the US charts. The Mute Records label takes advantage of this to launch a compilation The Singles 81>85 while Depeche Mode is associated with Gothic culture or Young culture in different countries. Black Celebration, in 1986, marks a turning point in Depeche Mode's music. The sound looks more atmospheric and textured, accompanied by the ever darker words of Gore. It is also an opportunity for the group to collaborate with Anton Corbijn for the A Question Of Time video, which will work on 18 other English videos.
Many albums follow, Music For The Masses , the cult Violator , Songs of Faith and Devotion , Ultra and Exciter , still in this New Wave vein. The band's career followed its path despite Wilder's departure in 1995 (which started in Recoil) and Gahan's concerns with drugs. Over the years, the popularity of Depeche Mode does not weaken, with singles like World In My Eyes , Personal Jesus or I Feel Loved and many tours.
Playing The Angel was born in 2005. Some words are written by Gahan for the first time since the beginning. Precious singles , A Pain That I'm Used To and Suffer Well make a place in the world charts, while a tour is launched in November with passages in several festivals: Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival or O2 Wireless . Remastered editions of several albums were released in 2006, as well as a DVD Touring the Angel: Live in Milan, a Best Of and a Grammy Award nomination.
Running 2007, during the promotion of Hurglass , Dave Gahan's second solo album , the musician announces that Depeche Mode will enter the studio in early 2008 for his 12th album. The English left Warner and turned to EMI and embarked on a European tour the following year, shortly after the release of Sounds Of The Universe.
