Biography

J Mascis (song, guitar) Lou Barlow (bass, singing) Murph (drums) After the split of their hardcore punk band Deep Wound, J Mascis and Lou Barlow form Dinosaur. Emmett Patrick Murphy quickly joined them on drums and they recorded a first album of the same name in 1985. Shortly after this new start the group must add "Jr" to its name because of another formation already bearing that name and decided to start legal proceedings. With the support of Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr signed on SST Records and recorded in 87 and 88 the two albums defining their sound between indie rock and grunge: You're Living All Over Me and Bug. In 1989, tensions between J Mascis and Lou Barlow threatened Dinosaur Jr. Lou Barlow then preferred to leave the band to devote himself exclusively to Sebadoh , a band in which he went so far as to clearly evoke in music his problems with J Mascis (the title "The Freed Pig"). After Green Mind, Murph's turn to leave the ship. J Mascis composes alone and performs on stage with the help of George Berz (battery) and Mike Johnson (bass). In 1997, J Mascis ended the Dinosaur Jr adventure and recorded solo albums released under the name "J Mascis and the Fog". To everyone's surprise, the trio was reformed in 2005 for a world tour of almost a year. Leaving aside dissension and turning the page of a tumultuous past, Dinosaur Jr released Beyond in 2007, 10 years after Hand It Over on Fat Possum Records. Unlike Nirvana , the group is only adeemed success. However, Dinosaur Jr still remains a rock monster who played a major part in the expansion of the grunge scene in the 1990s.
