Biography

Discharge was formed in 1977 in Stoke-On-Trent (England) around Tony "Bones" Roberts (guitar), Terry "Tezz" Roberts (song), Roy "Rainy" Wainright (guitar), Nigel Bamford (bass) and Tony "Hacko" Axon (battery). The arrival of Kelvin "Cal" Morris and the departure of Bamford, shortly after, caused a first overhaul, Tezz passing to the battery and Rainy to the bass. The band performed a few concerts before being noticed by Mike Stone, founder of Clay Records. Realities of War, the first 45 laps came into being in March of the same year. Sold to the rescue - Stone's car serving as a shop - the skeud manages against all expectations to enter the top 10 of Sound's independent ranking. Not wanting to stop in such a good way, Discharge is laying a new 45 laps called Fight Back, which has the same success.
From then on, the combo begins to turn more seriously, even performing the first part of U2 with which the relationships prove to be cordial, at least until the gastro-ethyl problems of Cal which, according to the legend, would have greatly incommodated Bono and cooled the atmosphere at the same time.
In 1981 Discharge recorded his first ep Why , without Tezz on the adventure and replaced for the occasion by Dave Ellesmere. This was followed by a wise tour entitled Apocalypse Now with The Exploited, Anti-Nowhere League and Anti-Pasti. After the hiring of Garry Maloney (ex-Varukers) to the battery, in early 1981, Never Again, illustrated with the famous pierced dove, inspired by a pacifist symbol.
Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing , the band's first album, was released in 1982. Given its success Discharge is approached by a large company but remains faithful to Clay Records. There is an important tour in Italy, Yugoslavia, the Netherlands and even in the United States and Canada. The situation began to deteriorate when the tour returned. Bones, an original member, left Discharge during the recording of State Violence, State Control and left to join his brother Tezz with whom he founded Broken Bones. Despite this hard blow, the other members still decide to continue and recruit Peter "Pooch" Purtell whose arrival causes a more metal turn. Discharge returned to the USA in 1983 just after the release of the maxi Warning: Her Majesty's Government Can Seriously Damage Your Health but lost on the way Pooch and Garry, respectively replaced by Les Hunt and Nick Haymaker. The band still finds the desire to record the maxi Ignorance in 1985, followed a year later by its second album Grave New World , but the heart is no longer there. The last US tour precipitates the departure of Rainy and Cal. Discharge temporarily ceased any activity in 1987. To the general surprise, the combo of Stoke gives a sign of life again in 1991. The former Cal and Garry resume service, accompanied by Andy Green on guitar and Anthony Morgan on bass, for two albums, Divine Massacre and Shootin Up the World, slightly oriented industrial metal, a little like what is done at the same time at PitchShifter or Optimum Wound Profile.
In 1997, the original members, Tezz, Bones, Cal and Rainy found themselves and decided to restart the machine. However, it is not until 2002 that this meeting will be put into practice on an eponymous album that reconnects somewhat with the style of the beginnings. Big surprise in 2015 with the announcement of an album for 2016 by Nuclear Blast as well as a participation in Hellfest.
