Dropkick Murphys was born in Boston in 1996. Originally, the band is in fact only a pretext for some friends to meet and party. The beginnings take place in the hairdressing salon of a colleague and the goal is to find a clever mix of all the musical influences with which the members grew up (punk rock, irish folk, rock and hardcore). Very quickly, the Dropkick Murphys found a favorable echo through the population and quickly obtained a deal with Hellcat Records, a street punk division of Epitaph. The band released its first Do Or Die skeud in 1997. At the time, the Dropkick Murphys still formed only a classic quartet with Mike MacColgan singing, which would be replaced by Al Barr from the recording of The Gang's All Here. Musically the band is ambitious and no longer satisfied with a four-way formula. An additional guitarist is recruited as well as folk instrument specialists such as Ryan Foltz and Spicy MacHaggis, the bagpipe player celebrated in "The Spicy MacHaggis Jig", who became full members from Sing Loud Sing Proud in 2000.
Five albums later, Dropkick Murphys became an essential band on the US stage and continues to expand its audience while remaining faithful to its roots and punk base.
