Biography

Enigma took shape in 1990 when Michael Cretu collaborated with producer and composer F. Gregorian (Franck Peterson) and Curly M.C. (David Fairstein) in writing. Louisa Stanley and the wife and singer Sandre Cretu also lend their voices on the musical project. Together they release that same year, under Virgin, one of the most cult albums of the new age current with MCMXC a.D. where Gregorian songs mix on ambient electro. The themes are religion and sexuality, inspired by the Marquis de Sade character. A few months later Frank Peterson left the project after fighting with Michael Cretu and founded another leading band in the new age, Gregorian.
Enigma returned in 1993 with the album The Cross of Changes , where ethnic songs and Eastern influence took the place of Gregorian songs. For this album Michel Cretu will be accompanied by artists like Peter Cornelius on guitar as well as only for this effort the presence of Andreas Harde with songs, Todd Peleg with choirs and Jens Gad (guitar). 3 years later it's the turn of the album The King is dead, live the King! to appear also causing the departure of Louisa Stanley and Peter Cornelius. A trilogy of the first 3 opus was released in 1998. The first musical turn took place first with The Screen Behind the Mirror in 2000, when Jens Gad returned to the band. In this new album, Elizabeth Houghton replaces the introductory voice of the albums, Louisa Stanley and the songs are entrusted to Ruth-Ann Boyle ( Olive) and Andru Donalds. This opus includes excerpts from O Fortuna from the opera Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, for the song Gravity of Love.

Two consecutive compilations were released in 2001, Love Sensuality Devotion: The Greatest Hits with unreleased tracks and the remix album Love Sensuality Devotion: The Remix Collection. For the new album Voyageur, in 2003, Enigma signed an album even more different than the previous ones with the absence of traditional or religious songs. This is also the latest album in which Sandra Cretu participates. In 2005, the band's third 15-year-old compilation, 15 Years After , was released with the first 5 albums. In 2006, Louisa Stanley returned to lend her voice on Enigma's new album, A Posteriori. So alone at the time of its conception the latter presents a more electro minimalist sound than the previous ones with a small presence of sung song. In 2008 it is an album where this time the songs are highlighted with guests such as Margarita Roig, Nanuk, Sebastian C., Nikita C. and again Andru Donalds. This 7th album, Seven Lives Many Faces , is a kind of return to the sources. The following year appeared The Platinum Collection , a Best-Of singles from Enigma's 7 albums. In 2010, for the band's 20th anniversary, Michel Cretu released a single, Enigma Social Song, with Alise Ketnere (aka Fox Lima ) as his main voice and Mark Joshua, Jérôme Pringault ( J. Spring ) and Rasa Veretenceviene ( Rasa Serra ) as his accompaniment. Enigma returned to the forefront in 2016 with an 8th album on behalf of The Fall of a Rebel Angel where Michel Cretu was joined by Anggun (voice), Aquilo (sings) and Mark Josher (sings, lyrics).
