Biography

In the early 1990s, Tom S. Englund and Dan Bronell, two classical guitarists, decided to play Death Metal together. Evergrey recorded his first demo in 1995, then contacted labels. In late 1996, the Swedes entered the studio to record The Dark Discovery. Unfortunately, the singer leaves the formation during the recording. Tom S. Englung, who was so far only a guitarist, will become an improvised singer. Her companion gave her singing lessons as she put the album in a box, and also participated in female choruses. The album will only be released in 1998. The second album will be released the following year and will be synonymous with many evolutions for Evergrey: after Solitude Dominance Tragedy , the band changed its label twice, and also recruited new bassist, guitarist, and keyboardist before their third album. In Search Of Truth was born in 2001, and after a tour with Therion, Rikard Zander incorporated Evergrey into keyboards. As a result of the above-mentioned tour, the Swedes were much more successful from Recreation Day (2003). Evergrey's music is always progressive in its technique and is more accessible in its structure. Tom S. Englund's voice has gained confidence and his stamp is filled with emotions, making the compositions open and accessible while addressing dark themes. In the same artistic line, The Inner Circle was released in 2004, followed the year after by Evergrey's first live, A Night To Remember, which was released on DVD and double CD. The album Monday Morning Apocalypse is available in 2006. After several years (and albums) of consistency, the line-up is again tested. Jari Kainulainen (ex- Stratovarius ) joined the band in 2007 and recorded with Evergrey the album Torn , released in 2008. On the following tour, it's a double blow for the band. On the one hand, 35,000 euros of equipment is stolen from them. On the other hand, Henrik Danhage, Jonas Ekdahl and Jari Kainulainen left the band. Alone aboard with his keyboardist Rikard Zander, leader Tom S. Englund has doubts about Evergrey's continuation. They finally decide to give themselves a chance, and write three titles, which they find convincing. The three missing musicians are therefore recruited (Marcus Jidell on guitar, Johan Niemann (ex- Therion) on bass, and Hannes Van Dahl on drums) and Glorious Collision is finally released in 2011. At the end of the same year, the band celebrates its fifteen years with a best-of, A Decade And A Half. The uncertainty comes back in 2013 with the departure of Hannes Van Dahl who becomes drummer at Sabaton . Tom S. Englund also chooses not to continue working with Marcus Jidell and Evergrey's evince. In August 2014, the band formalized the return of Henrik Danhage and Jonas Ekdahl, respectively guitarist of the band from 2001 to 2010 and drummer from 2004 to 2010. Hymns For The Broken , the latest album, is recorded with this line-up.
