The Heavens project was born in an instant during one day in August 2004. Matthew Thomas Skiba (Alkaline Trio , Matt Skiba ) has just moved from Chicago to Los Angeles, co-located with Josiah Steinbrick (bassist of F-Minus , Come Together (ex- Thieves Like Us ) and Flowers Of Doom ). The latter one day released a cassette of instrumental titles that he has composed recently and makes it listen to Skiba who is conquered. For a week, they compose and arrange the songs while Skiba writes the lyrics on his side.
As the demos are ready, they ask Ben Lovett to record and refine the disc at Sunny Heights. Their friend Matthew Compton joins them to put in a box some parts of battery. Patent Pending is soon ready met will not be released until September 2006, the two competitors being without label and busy within their respective groups. In '06, Skiba makes the finished product listen to Brett Gurewitz (founder and patron of Epitaph ) who is seduced and offers a deal to the duo. Just after the release of the album, they made some dates in the UK and the United States, before Skiba resumed her activities with Alkaline Trio, who was preparing a new album.
