Biography

Indica is a Finnish pop/rock band from Helsinki founded in 2001 and composed since then by Johanna Salomaa (chant, violin, guitar, keyboard), Heini Säisä (bass), Sirkku Karvonen (clavier), Jenny Julia (guitar) and Laura Häkkänen (battery). Johanna aka "Jonsu" unique author/composer of the band draws a great deal from her inspiration for the composition in the B.O. films when the lyrics are essentially drawn from her own life or from that of her relatives. It all really started in 2003 when the band got a contract with Sony , which allows them to start working on Ikuinen Virta , their first album co-produced by Erno Latinen (which will also produce the next two opus) and Gabi Hakanen which was released in 2004. Success does not come immediately but Ikuinen Virta will still finish platinum in 2006. Tuuliset tienot released in October 2005 and was released before the end of the year, followed by Kadonnut puutarha in the spring of 2007 which confirmed the popularity of Finnish people in their country. At the end of 2007 the band finally left its lands to ensure the first departure of Nightwish on their Scandinavian tour, creating links with Tuomas Holopainen who produced Valoissa's fourth album of the band released in September 2008. The following year Indica again performed the first part of Nightwish accompanied by Pain, but this time across Europe (first French concert in March 2009). This first period during which Jonsu sang exclusively in Finnish will be concluded with a best of Pahinta tänään , released in October 2009 including three unreleased titles. Due to its growing success abroad, and six months after signing with Nuclear Blast, the band released A Way Away in June 2010 an album exclusively composed of former titles reworked instrumentally and this time sung entirely in English. In 2013, Indica returned to the studio, and after a rather long recording process, the band announced the release of its fifth studio album for January 2014, which will be released in two versions, Shine in English at Nuclear Blast and Akvaario in Finnish at Suomen Musiikki.
