Insomnium
Biography
Insomnum took shape in 1997. In Joensuu, Finland, four young types join forces to create a group that is both melodic and nevertheless abrasive, and that would not revive the richness of the atmospheres. Influenced notably by In Flames , Dark Tranquillity and Opeth , the group marries Scandinavian sound with its Finnish roots which sometimes evoke Amorphis even in the themes close to the country's nature and folklore, but always in a melancholic and mortiferous vein. In 1999, the band released a first demo and then a second, attracting the approval of the labels. In early 2001, the founding members, namely the guitarist Ville Friman, drummer Markus Hirvonen and bassists/singer Niilo Sevänen, joined forces with a second guitarist, Ville Vänni. This new line-up of Insomnum signed a contract with Candlelight Records. Their first album, In The Halls Of Awaiting, was released in April 2002. The disc is very well perceived, especially for its progressive influences diluted in a melodic death metal of very good bill. And it is on this dynamic that the band continues its journey with a second album released in 2004. Since The Day It All Came Down allows Insomnum to push the nail, with the same melodic quality, acoustic interludes and a flyy sense of riff, all bathing in an atmosphere of sadness. The band returned in 2006 with a new album of beautiful quality, entitled Above The Weeping World , which accentuates the contrasting and dark atmospheres that the band likes to play.
