Kyuss
Biography
It was in the middle of the Californian desert in 1990, specifically in Palm Desert, that four friends decided to combine their talents to form a rock band. These are John Garcia (song), Josh Man (guitar), Brant Bjork (battery) and Chris Cockrell (bass). A first album will soon be released at Black Highway Records under the name of Sons Of Kyuss , with reference to the role play Donjons And Dragons whose musicians are ardent followers. Despite a limited circulation of 1000 vinyls, the record allows the group to browse many dusty clubs in its native region. It is then time to move on to serious things with Wretch in 1991, an album whose ambition was hailed at the time by critics, but which ultimately did not find its audience. In order to make up for Chris Cockrell's departure some time later, Kyuss joined a new bassist in Nick Oliveri's position. The band's career will then shift the following year with Blues For The Red Sun , an album considered the founder of a new musical current: the Stoner. This so special groove sound combining blues, rock, and doom inherited from Black Sabbath will spread as a drag of powder, leading Kyuss to share the poster with bands such as Faith No More or Metallica. Not resistant to the sirens of The Dwarves punk (and later of his own group Mondo Generator, based on a title he composed at Kyuss ) Nick Oliveri will leave his place to Scott Reeder, a bearded giant with bare feet, who served in the Doom group The Obsessed. In 1994, Welcome To Sky Valley will definitely establish Kyuss's popularity to the point that all the festivals are tearing off their arrival. The extended tours will follow, as will the internal tensions, until Brant Bjork decides to leave the ship in order to win the ranks of Fu Manchu. Alfredo Hernandez will be acting on the last dates of the tour, and on what would constitute the last discographic effect of the Californians in 1995: ...And The Circus Leaves Town. Title one can no longer premonitory, since Kyuss separated in 1996 at the initiative of Josh Homme, leaving to pass a legacy of the most substantial to the generations/groups that followed. The musical appetite of our pioneers is, however, far from being satisfied. Josh Homme will be founding the Queens Of The Stone Age with Nick Oliveri, with their successful career (note that the latest combo-composed titles will be gathered on a split with the QOTSA in 1997). As for John Garcia, he will remain closer to the original spirit of Stoner by founding Unida alongside Scott Reeder, or Hermano more recently. Brant Bjork, for his part, will cease his activities at Fu Manchu to embark on a solo career and various collaborations.
