Lab Deg
Biography
It all starts in July 1998. Musicians from St-Germain-en-Laye, who know each other from sight, some of whom have already played together, decide to lock themselves in a rehearsal room. They move towards the dub, but without any knowledge of the codes of the genre. Their respective liabilities in global "shadow" groups will forge this sound so characteristic of Lab's dub. Six months after the first hour of rehearsal, Lab° recorded in one night their first album: Dubalgan 500mg , which will lay the foundations. Adhesive of DIY, the band releases the self-produced record on their own label Mille Billiards, even spending evenings by hand making the famous medicine box cover. Taffy AP , second album , released in 2001 : it pushes further the drafts posed by Dubalgan 500mg and affirms the style of the band. This does not mean that Lab° will recycle a recipe. Evidence of this is the third opus released in 2003, Behind the Rain. While keeping this base of dark and lancinating music, the guitars are sometimes more incisive, cinematic influences slip into it (we obviously think of Ennio Morricone). More than half of the album was created from improvisations. From the fourth album, Müs , Lab° experimentes with a method that will become the band's recording process as the members meet for a few days in the same place, which wants to be anything but a studio (for example, an old Basque farm or a 17th century mansion in Normandy). From there, the group improvises, recording everything it produces. Then members listen again, add effects, and remix tracks. Some pieces have been created from any piece, while others are more conventional. Again, Lab° pushes further in its own direction, resuming where the previous album had stopped: the B.O. of an unhealthy film where brutal rock, strange pop and noise confront each other. 2010 saw Volume born, frontal and hypnotic, deepening the group's inclination for experimentation.
