Biography

A band or rather a singer launched by Trent Reznor ( Nine Inch Nails), Marilyn Manson, by his real name Brian Warner, has moved from a small group of Indus from Florida to the black beast of the church and the "good" American society. Portrait Of An American Family in 1994 and Smells Like Children , elongated EP, in 1995 are still only the beginnings, even though the resumption of Sweet Dreams from Eurhythmics makes him know the greatest number. The band, still called Marilyn Manson&The Spooky Kids, is looking for an identity, but already the ideas are there and Manson borrows his decorum from Roald Dahl in particular. It was in 1996 that the band exploded in front of the world with Antichrist Superstar , a terrible album produced by Trent Reznor, on which the Antechrist of Nietzsche crossed, the ribs of Schopenhauer's pessimism, the elements of the Kabbal and philosophical satanism in a saraband of infernal references. The singer achieves his first goal, becoming a superstar of rock, driven notably by the huge success of the single The Beautiful People, with his memorable video by Floria Sigismoni. He also collaborated with David Lynch who offered him an appearance in his film Lost Highway. Two of his songs are used for the soundtrack, including the unedited Apple Of Sodom, dedicated he will say in his "autobiography" Memoirs of Hell, to Fiona Apple.
And it is in this liberated state of mind, from whom everything succeeds (he is then with the young actress Rose McGowan, hangs out with Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins or Michael Stipes of REM ) that he recorded Mechanical Animals in 1998, album as well influenced by David Bowie, Iggy Pop&The Stooges for music, as by the writer Aldous Huxley on the background. He explores his new status, playing an androgynous image, that of Omega, and clichés of rock, between media hookers and the use of various drugs. But reality catch up with him, he scrambles with Trent Reznor, whose corrosive Starfuckers inc. is dedicated to him, and the killing of Columbine High School is largely attributed to him. I mean, he splits up with his girlfriend. Completely devastated, he embarked on a megalomaniac and intimate album, Holy Wood, released in 2000, where he went back to war, under the new appearance of Mercury / Adam Jadman, armed with disparate references to JFK, Jesus Christ, the fanatical religion, and the violence of American society. The ensuing tour, Guns God and Government Tour, is monstrous, although the album has worked moderately.
After a quieter period, with the only single Tainted Love to keep his fans waiting, the Reverend returns to the front of the stage in 2003 with The Golden Age Of Grotesque, this time influenced by the old continent and its atmospheres of the 1930s, between cabaret and dandysm. Manson, still also influenced by women who share his life, embarks this time in a universe close to that of his companion, the Dita Von Teese model. This album announces a real change in music, undoubtedly more accessible. Twiggy Ramirez (renamed Jordie White) left for other horizons with A Perfect Circle then Nine Inch Nails (holds, hold...) the band turned a little more towards electronic sounds, under the influence of Tim Skold (ex KMFDM), bassist, but also co-producer. The album was a great success, but was regularly criticized, even though one could not help but think that the tone of the record was most sarcastic. Following a new recovery, this time the Personal Jesus of Depeche Mode, released the best of Last We Forget in 2004. Manson has meanwhile once again separated himself from his guitarist, this time John 5 (like the fifth wheel of the coach), who has since released two albums of guitar-hero, Vertigo and Songs For Sanity, which deserve attention.
Marilyn Manson's fonds of commerce remain the provocation, which assures him a wide audience, but the artist also knows how to convey ideas that disturb and constantly change form as well as musical style, from indus to electro-metal and glam rock. A true showman, more performing than a singer, Marilyn Manson is adorned in his music, his music clips and his concerts, with an imagery in general very dark that has regularly earned him the qualification of gothic, in a wrong way. In reality, our man's talent is to learn how to draw inspiration from multiple references, mostly out of music, to create albums that are always very ambianced and full of reading tracks. To sum up, Marilyn Manson is a little bit the spiritual son of David Bowie and the cursed brother of Trent Reznor.
