Biography

Masters of reality is an American alternative rock band from Syracuse, New York, formed in 1981 by guitarist singer Chriss Goss and guitarist Tim Harrington. The band's style is very often associated with the stoner/desert rock movement and oscillates between heavy, blues and rock. Their style is a little different from the stoner rock and more "posed" than the stoner metal, although some of the band's songs belong entirely to this movement (bluesy passes, psychedelic components, guitars tuned very low, omnipresence of bass, etc...). The band released its first album "Masters of Reality", often called "The Blue Garden", in 1988, which went more or less unnoticed and then dissolved the band at the end of 1989. It will take 3 years for Chriss Goss to reform the band and release their second album "Sunrise on the Sufferbus", then 7 years for their 3rd studio album "Welcome to the Western Lodge". And Chris Goss to justify himself "Masters Of Reality will always be a project with alternating lineups. First of all, because I can't pay paying people to tell them're in the band." Masters of Reality will release in the end few albums (6 in 29 years of existence), Chriss Goss performing a second activity as an overflowing producer and unable to maintain the band consistently. And what a producer! It is to him that we owe the albums of Kyuss Blues for the Red Sun , Welcome to Sky Valley and ...And the Circus Leaves Town or even volumes 3, 4, 7 and 8 of Desert Sessions , all albums of Queens of the Stone Age , and also the production of albums of Mark Lanegan , UNKLE , Screaming Trees , Mondo Generator and many others, the list is long. So many artists influenced in the 1990s - 2000 by this phenomenon, so that some will consider Chriss Goss as one of the sponsors of the stoner movement, as the artist influenced all these stoner artists. In 2001 they released their fourth studio album "Deep in the Hole", certainly one of their best album, with the participation of artists from the planet "desert rock", such as Nick Oliveri and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) or Mark Lanegan. Josh Man and Nick Olieveri will also take part in the exceptional tour that will follow ("Flak'n'Flight"). The stoner is a big family! In 2004, they returned with Give Us Barrabas and then Pine/Cross Dover in 2009. Masters Of Reality, will never know the glory, but will have helped with a master hand to develop the very particular style of the stone rock and influenced an incredible number of bands in the 1990s - 2000.
