Melvins
Biography
In the early 1980s, high school friends formed Melvins in Washington State. The trio was formed by Matt Lukin (bass), Mike Dillard (drums) and Buzz Osborne (guitar, singing). The hour is at hardcore punk but Dale Crover (current drummer) quickly replaces Mike Dillard and changes the orientation of the band, they slow down the tempo and their sound becomes much heavier than anyone at the time. The Melvins are beginning to make a reputation by shielding the city's bars. One of their fan, a certain Kurt Cobain even helps them carry their equipment during the concerts ("he makes the sandwiches very well" will say Buzz about it elsewhere). The Melvins signed in 1985 on the young label C/Z Records and recorded their first EP Deep Six , republished each time with more songs ; 8 Songs then 10 Songs were born in 1986. These songs are now available on the 26 Songs released on Ipecac in 2003. Very quickly they record Gluey Porch Treatments that comes out the following year. They now have more than a significant discography and are considered one of the major groups of the 1990s. The trio is totally overshadowed by Nirvana's immense popularity but has been successful in the Atlantic Records years with Houdini (1993) and Stoner Witch (1994). A curse hit the Melvins since Lukin left to form the Mudhoney grunge group. Not less than half a dozen bassists will succeed each other, including Joe Preston ( Earth , High On Fire , Thrones ) from 91 to 94, Kevin Rutmanis ( Tomahawk ) from 98 to 2004 or Trevor Dunn ( Mr Bungle , Fantomas ) in 2005 and 2012. Some collaborations will emerge, with the dark/ambient band Lustmord in 2004, with Fantomas and two albums with Jello Biafra (ex-singer of the Dead Kennedys). Today the band has integrated the stupid rock Big Business duo into its line-up and thus has two drummers. The Melvins released (A) Senile Animal in 2006 on Ipecac, Mike Patton's label. In 2008 a live Melvin DVD with Fantomas ( Fantomas/Melvins Big Band Live) and a new album, Nude With Boots are released. Two years later came The Bride Screamed Murder and the band started releasing one record a year, the live Sugar Daddy in 2011, followed by Freak Puke in 2012 in a "light" configuration with Trevor Dunn on bass, and finally the album of covers Everybody Loves Sauses in 2013, at Ipecac and Differ-Ant. The same year Tres Cabrones was released with the 1983 line-up (Osborne, Crover, Dillard) line-up "1983" : Buzz Osborne - guitar/chant/bass/percussion Dale Crover - bass/drum/percussion/chant Mike Dillard - drums/percussion/chant line-up "classic" : Buzz Osborne - guitar/chant Dale Crover - drums Coady Willis - drums (since 2006) Jared Warren - bass/chant (since 2006) line-up "light" : Buzz Osborne - guitar/chant Dale Crover - drums Trevor Dunn - bass/counterbass
