Mr Bungle
Biography
Formed in 1985 in California in the little Eureka bled by high school comrades, Mr. Bungle was composed at the time of his signature by Warner in 1991 by Mike Patton (song, keyboards), Trey Spruance (guitars, keyboards), Trevor Dunn (bass), Danny Heifetz (drums), Clinton McKinnon (saxophone), and Theo Lengyel (saxophone). Mike Patton is parallel singer of the fusion band Faith No More, which allows Mr. Bungle to gain fame and be signed by an important record company, but slows down the production of the band that will produce only three albums in eight years. Mr. Bungle's style is recognizable by the brutal changes in rhythm, style and atmosphere within a single piece (like Naked City or Frank Zappa). At the confluence of many influences (Slayer , John Zorn , György Ligeti ,...), the coloring of albums gradually evolves: the mixture of metal and ska of the beginnings gives way to a rock tinted with free-jazz, then to a more pop music. Their music, however, remains on the margins of classical music production and difficult to access. The group was also noticed by its staggered stage performances. The limbs appeared grotesquely disguised, with Mike Patton wearing a leather mask (or latex), others disguised as women. For the tour that followed the album Disco Volante, long sequences were reserved for the most extreme noise improvisations. The group will call this tour the Théâtre de la Cruauté in reference to Antonin Artaud's concept. Its members no longer intend to collaborate in the future, preferring to work on their personal projects: Fantomas , Tomahawk , and Peeping Tom , for example, for Mike Patton, Secret Chiefs 3 for Trey Spruance. Although there was no official statement announcing the separation, Mike Patton announced in an interview given as a member of Fantomas around 2005 that "Mr. Bungle no longer exists". But the Bungle didn't actually make its last fuss, since in 2019 Trey Spruance, Trevor Dunn and Mike Patton decided to resurrect the corpse by attacking the re-recording of the very first demo The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny, to give the pieces the rendering they deserved (in fact the original demo was almost inaudible). Clearly Thrash Metal, these tracks were to be reinterpreted with the greatest of the stage, i.e. Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer, Fantomas, Dead Cross) on drums and Scott Ian (Anthrax) on rhythm guitar, very excited by the project. The recording took place in ten days after a series of closed-door concerts in the United States. In order to make it a complete album, the band has integrated new releases of the time as well as a cover of Corrosion of Conformity (loss For Words). The album was released in October 2020, naturally hosted by Ipecac Recordings.
