Biography

Everything has already been written about Oasis, one of the most important rock bands of the 1990s. Founded in 1991 in Manchester, under the name of The Rain which is very soon abandoned, by Liam Gallagher singing, Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs on guitar, Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan on bass and Tony McCarroll on drums. Noel Gallagher, Liam's brother, quickly joined the band and seized the lead guitar and announced that he had several compositions in his pocket. The five musicians followed live performances in several UK clubs, but failed to break through. In 1993, the band was invited to play in Glasgow ahead of Alan McGee, the director of Creation Record. The reputation of the Scots of origin is no longer to be done in the independent milieu since its label counts, or has counted, in its ranks Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Ride or even The Jesus And Mary Chain. Taking the opportunity, Oasis rents a van, plays and gets noticed by McGee who offers them a contract on his label, recently included in the Sony stable. The band then recorded a first album, which will be distributed worldwide by the Major. Several singles later, Definitely Maybe is available on the market and quickly becomes number 1 in the UK. At the same time, the band's reputation is becoming more and more noticeable: quickly adapting the rhythm "Drugs, Rock'n'Roll and Fights". The many yellings of the two brothers, sometimes on television or radio, as well as the many overflows during their stage performances, shock the audience and win the hearts of many fans. 1995 turns out to be the year that will turn Oasis into a whole new era. The rivalry between them and Blur, another star formation of what is now called Britpop, will lead to a real media outcry. Tony McCarroll was replaced, without care, by another musician named Alan White. Yet, their second album, (What's The Story) Morning Glory ? is one of the most impressive hits in music history. In one week, 350,000 copies were made available in the United Kingdom. In total, the work sells more than four million copies. Oasis becomes the most famous rock band in the world. The resulting world tour is huge, with the band playing around the world. In August 1996, Oasis played at Stevenage's Knebworth Park in front of 125,000 people two consecutive nights, while 5% of the country's population tried to get seats. This sudden and unexpected explosion of their careers will remain their peak. In 1997, Be Here Now disappointed the public and critics, despite significant but disappointing sales figures. The excess drugs, the oversized egos of the two Gallagher brothers and their behaviour prevent the group from working calmly. The absences of one of the brothers are not uncommon, whether during concerts or interviews. The speculations on the group's separation will never end after each dispute. In 1998, the compilation The Masterplan compiles many B faces of the band, a release that turns out to be one of the most interesting in the band's career, often ignored by their fans. Oasis experienced a dark period in 1999, when two founding members of the group, Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs and Paul McGuigan announced their departure two weeks apart. The band, which is now a trio, is still beginning to work on its next record. The recording is done with studio musicians while Colin "Gem" Archer is integrated with the band some time later. Creation Records announces its closure at the end of 1999 and Oasis chose to found its own label, Big Brother, to release its new album, Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants, which is officially available in 2000. Once again, sales are numerous, but they do not reach the previous figures. Andy Bell, the former guitarist and singer of Ride , is part of the band as a bassist and the band is embarking on a tour that has its share of rebounds. In 2001, the band embarked on a six-date tour in the United Kingdom to celebrate its ten-year anniversary, the seats were sold quickly, with some fans going as far as to line up for 48 hours to get the precious sesame. Proof that Oasis still has a solid fan base. The atmosphere seems to return to calm and the release of Heathen Chemistry in 2002 is smooth. However, later that year Liam and Alan White, the drummer, fought in a German hotel. A few teeth broken later, the two musicians were free to return to the United Kingdom. The band quickly decided to record a new record and the Death In Vegas band was chosen to become their producer. Unfortunately, sessions are unproductive and recordings will never be made. In 2004, Alan White was ejected from the band by other members because of a lack of personal and artistic investment. On May 31, 2005, the band released its sixth album, Don't Believe The Truth , which proved to be an artistic and commercial success. The European tour has no difficulty in filling up quickly, as is the case at the zenith of Paris. A tour of the stadiums of the United Kingdom is set up and the group seems to be reviving with the esteem of the press and appears much more stable than in recent years. The Stop The Clocks compilation was released for sale in 2006 and is the occasion for Noel Gallagher to go on an acoustic tour, accompanied by two other musicians, to promote it. The reputation of Oasis seems not to be tarnished since at the end of 2007, the NME (New Musical Express) and Q magazines are organizing a huge national survey. The band was named the second most important in the history of English music, after the Beatles. Their first album was elected the most important record in the history of English music. The seventh and final album was released in October 2008 and is called Dig Out Your Soul and is highly appreciated by the press. Often cited as their best record since Be Here Now, the band now seems stable from any point of view. However, the anecdote is famous, the two Gallagher brothers are violently fighting in the lodges of the Rock En Seine festival. The elder announces that he leaves the band while the concert is cancelled just minutes before his supposed beginning.
