Operation Ivy
Biography
Operation Ivy is the name of the American nuclear tests conducted in the 1950s. But it is also and above all the name of a famous ska/punk band, composed of Lint (Tim Armstrong), Matt McCall (Matt Freeman), Jesse Michaels and Dave Mello. The band quickly forged a reputation in its native California, inventing a style that will influence many musicians in the future and that mixes the speed of punk performance with the sound of the ska (without the brass).
The career of Operation Ivy will be very short, from 1987 to 1989 only. They released several EPs and a single album, Energy in 1989. The group is also present on many compilations. The rest of the adventure is known: if Jesse Michaels disappeared from circulation before returning to the music scene and forming other bands, Tim and Matt will found Rancid in the early 1990s, with the success we know.
Tapi in the shadow of Rancid since the creation of this band, Operation Ivy is offered a second life by the label Hellcat Records which reissues the album in the form of an eponymous album with the addition of the EP Heretic released in 1988, thus compiling 27 songs. Rancid has for some time been playing pieces of the band ("Knowledge" for example) and rumours have recently announced the reformation of this famous combo, denied by Tim Armstrong.
