Otep
Biography
Otep formed in 2000 around Otep Shamaya, the only member present since its creation. While it is freshly constituted, Sharon Osbourne attends one of her very first performances, she is delighted to propose to her husband to programme it at the Ozzfest, the performance attracts the eye of Capitol Records, and the band is signed on one of the biggest labels after a few concerts and without any demo. After JIhad EP in 2001, Otep released his first album in 2002, Sevas Tra is produced by Terry Date (Pantera , Prong , Deftones ...), and makes no concessions, over-vitamin catchy riffs on which Shamaya spits his hatred unabated, however some slower and ambianced titles such as Jonestown Tea offer less frontal and nuanced violence. In 2004 the Californian band returned with a second opus more suffocating than the previous one, more composed of low tempo passages, House of Secrets is an unhealthy object reflecting the tormented personality of its host. The combo then embarks on a three-year tour, in 2007 it passes at Koch Records and proposes a third mischief, The Ascension which totally denotes its two predecessors, Shamaya's metamorphosis is visible both physically and vocally, the song is more feminine and less guttural, the riffs and melodies more neat and worked, the success is at the rendezvous in the US charts. Two years later Otep is back at Victory Records with Smash the Control Machine that does not change the deal, we find as guests Koichi Fukuda ( Static-X), and Emilie Autumn , on the tour that follows the band is on the road with Five Finger Death Punch among others. In 2011 Atavist reconnects with the bodybuild penchant of the first album, on this fifth baby Otep ventures into a cover of Not to Touch The Earth by The Doors, it is followed in 2012 by a live Sounds Like Armageddon, then in 2013 by Hydra a creation composed largely of Spoken Words. Otep Shamaya had announced this sixth LP as the last, but recently retracted announcing that he would have a successor, without further precision.
