Pagan Altar is a cult formation in the history of the Doom since she forms, in the company of Trouble, Pentagram and Saint Vitus, the square of what is usually called the Maryland Doom, the name derived from the so particular sound of Doom groups from that state of the United States. However, Pagan Altar is not an American but a British formation, since it was founded in Brockley in 1978 by cousins Alan and Terry Jones. Very influenced by their compatriots of Black Sabbath but also by Uriah Heep , Deep Purple or Jethro Tull , the two companions recruit musicians and embark on the great bath of composition. It was not until 1982, however, to see Volume 1 , the first conceptual album focused on magic, witchcraft, and the occult, with satanism. From a musical point of view, we are dealing with a primitive form of traditional Doom of very high quality, with Rock, Blues and even NWOBHM hints. However, the band remains more well known for its live performances, very close to a play since it is performed in costumes in the midst of decors, scenes, in short everything necessary to convey the messages that the training intends to pass on. Despite this, the band eventually fell into oblivion as their compatriots of Witchfinder General, victim of his music between two genres, not enough Heavy Metal or Doom enough. Yet, more than twenty-two years later, Pagan Altar made a frightful return with a new opus, The Lords of Hypocrisy , this time focused on the concept of man's inhumanity towards man. Critics praise this record as coming out of the burns of time. This reappearance is not just a fire of straw but indeed a resurrection, since the same year comes out a best-of, The Time Lord, followed two years later by Mythical & Magical who again will receive a dithyrambic welcome. Note that the discography of the group has been repeatedly reissued with sometimes different titles, so it is difficult to agree on the actual number of official releases.
