Pantheist
Biography
Pantheist was founded in 2000 in Antwerp, Belgium on the initiative of Kostas, critic on doom-metal.com and incidentally psychologist and researcher. The name comes from the pantheistic philosophy that God and the Universe are one. Greek etymology summarizing things as follows: "pan" means everything, and "theos" God. This concept is pushed in the direction of an impossible human understanding and therefore of isolation, despair and lamentations, which is perfectly suited to the funeral doom played by the group. With Nicholas, guitarist and co-founder, they recorded in 2000 a first demo aided by session musicians, 1000 Years. Under the influence of the Finnish style of Thergothon or Skepticism, they also don't hesitate to inject prog' rock influx into the lineage of Pink Floyd or Anathema in the quietest parts of their music. Their first album, O Solitude , released in 2003, also makes the part of religious and haunted atmospheres, and takes a classic from Chopin and Bach. Pantheist also skillfully mixes grooved, spoken and clear songs.
The group is experiencing many changes in line-up, but manages to turn with heavy trucks, including Skepticism, Evoken, but also Esoteric. To facilitate recordings, rehearsals and concerts, the band migrated to London in 2004. Andy Semmens and bassist Mark Bodossian of Esoteric join them for the recording of Amartia , released in 2005. This is a concept album, on the theme of the 7 capital sins. Nicholas unfortunately left the group for family reasons that year, and it was Ilia Rodriguez who replaced him. A new EP enriched with the remastered demo 1000 Years, was released at Serpent's Lair. There is a cover of Katatonia's For Funerals To Come .
