Paul Gilbert
Biography
Paul Gilbert was born in 1966. Very soon he became friends with Mike Varney, the founder of Shrapnel Records, a label on which most of his records will be released later. In 1985 he joined the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) and became a guitar teacher once he graduated. He founded Racer X with his classmate Juan Alderete, bassist. The band immediately makes talk about him because of the virtuosity of the solo parts strongly inspired by the neo-classical style popularized by Randy Rhoads or Yngwie Malmsteen . After two albums, the band split up and Paul Gilbert was approached by bassist Billy Sheehan, who had just left David Lee Roth's band, and with Eric Martin singing and Pat Torpey on drums, they founded Mr. Big. The band enjoyed great success in Japan, but it was in 1991 with their second album Lean Into It , which they will explode thanks to their ballad To Be With You or the song Daddy Brother Lover Little Boy (The Electric Drill Song) on which Paul Gilbert uses a drill equipped with mediator to play solo. That same year Paul Gilbert released his first solo recording, an EP tribute to Jimi Hendrix. He recorded two more albums with Mr. Big before leaving the band in 1997 to pursue a prolific solo career in a more pop style, and did not hesitate to make covers of classic songs, notably by Jean Sébastien Bach. In 1999 he revived Racer X and recorded three new albums with this band, in parallel with his solo career. In 2005 he married Emi, which is not just news people since Emi is a pianist, classically trained and jazz, she had a strong musical influence on her husband and that they are now playing together. In 2009, Mr. Big reformed his original line-up on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the release of their first album, and in 2011 they released a new album What If . In 2010, Paul Gilbert released his album Fuzz Universe , which contains an impressive version of Partita en Do minor by Jean Sébastien Bach , and in 2012 he released his latest album to date, Vibrato , very influenced blues and jazz.
