Pavement

Pavement is the project of two Californian musicians, Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg. Very influenced by bands like The Fall or The Replacements , Pavement was the lead of indie rock in the 90's, having put forward a lo-fi-oriented style, between noise guitars and laconic vocals. A place alongside Sonic Youth or Yo La Tengo in how to destructure their music and make dissonance a full sound.
It was in 1992 that the band's first album, which became a quartet, Slanted And Enchanted , was released, which enjoyed a first public success despite its weak diffusion, mainly due to its particular sound. A sound that the band will focus on making clearer on the next album, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), of which "Cut Your Hair" is the obvious tube, to the point of passing on MTV and passing the band on TV sets.
If the band gains in fame, starting on tour in Europe and Japan, musically and internally, the members are fragmented, caught up in other projects. Wowee Zowee (1995) is a half-tone album, less inspired that doesn't even convince their authors. Malkmus will say, however, that this is the last album in the Pavement style. In order to regain some credibility, after a disastrous performance at Lollapalooza (completely thrown, the band jamms inconsistently throughout its set in front of an angry audience), the band releases Brighten The Corners , much more mainstream and selling than previous albums. This does not solve internal problems.
The recording of their latest album, Terror Twilight (1999) is particularly chaotic: the laziness band in studio, disagreements over the songs to be included on the album are mounting. Nigel Godrich (who also produced Radiohead , R.E.M , Beck among others) was then called, which produced a frustrating album for all members. The band split up in 2000 after a last six-month tour that saw relations between Malkmus and Kannberg deteriorate.
Since 2006, rumours of reformation appear here and there without any confirmation from the group.
