Queen
Biography
In the early 1970s in London, four young musicians, Tim Staffel, Brian May, Roger Taylor and Chris Smith formed a Blues Rock band called Smile. Tim takes classes in the same school as a certain Farrokh Bulsara, a young immigrant student of Indian origin but born in Zanzibar, Africa. This eccentric young man, also singer in a band named Wreckage, quickly becomes a friend and also the biggest fan of Smile. After several recorded demos, Tim Staffel decided to leave the band in 1970. Farrokh then persuaded Brian May and Roger Taylor, not necessarily convinced of his talents as a singer, to continue their activity with him. Together, they started looking for a bass player and in February 1971, young John Deacon was invited to join the band, now called Queen. Farrokh changed his name to Freddie Mercury. The story is on. Queen signed very quickly on EMI Music and recorded a first eponymous album, which appeared in 1973, and then the following year, a second soberly titled Queen II. After conquering Britain and shooting in the United States, Queen released a third album, Sheer Heart Attack. In 1975, The English hit very hard with A Night At The Opera, commercial success and considered one of the best efforts of the band. Is present on the album, the tube become universal Bohemian Rhapsody . The albums then continued, first A Day At The Races in 1976, then News Of The World in 1977. On this album, again, two singles can be even more famous than Bohemian Rhapsody, i.e. We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. Used and reused repeatedly, for occasions as diverse as they are varied, all over the world, these two titles are considered to be true Rock hymns. Jazz is the seventh album of the quartet and was released in 1978, followed by The Game in 1980. The same year, the band recorded the B.O. of Flash Gordon. In 1981 Queen gave a concert in São Polo in front of 130,000 people, a record at the time. In 1982 Queen changed a little style and offered a rather Pop/R&B/Dance-oriented Hot Space. There is the single Under Pressure, co-written between the four members of the band and David Bowie. 1984 saw the arrival of The Works, accompanied by new hits such as Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free or It's A Hard Life. That same year, Freddie and his friends embarked on a controversial tour of South Africa, then hit by apartheid. The group wipes virulent criticism upon their return to England. In 1985, they played twice in front of 325,000 people in Rio, which is a new record, although this time it was the Rock In Rio festival, and they were the first major band to tour in South America. They returned to England to participate in Live Aid 85 in Wembley. After being strongly criticized by the press, Queen's phenomenal performance book that puts everyone in agreement, and eclipses all the other groups present that day in London and around the world. Queen was indeed the largest group of the moment. In 1986, the band revived its Rock roots and offered A Kind Of Magic. Six of the nine tracks on this album are used in the film Highlander . A closed-window tour is launched and they play two nights in a row at Wembley. These legendary performances are recorded, but only released on album in 1992 as Live At Wembley Stadium '86. 1989, the English return with The Miracle. Again, the singles I Want It All , The Invisible Man , The Miracle and Breakthru make it a classic of the band's discography. In 1991, the album Innuendo marked a turning point for the band. Indeed, in addition to being one of the biggest hits of the English discography, this is also the band's latest album to be released. Although Freddie and his family have been hiding it from the public for several years, the musician is heavily infected with HIV. Innuendo bears his name (understood). Throughout the album, one feels some particular emotions in addition to a sense of black humour in Freddie's texts. He still continues to move forward, despite his rapidly deteriorating state of health. The Show Must Go We sing Freddie, like a state of mind that refuses to let itself be destroyed by illness. We will also remember the video of Days Of Our Lives, where we can see the latest video images of a lean and pale Freddie Mercury, which releases a very moving "I still love you..." to the camera at the end of the clip. On November 23, 1991, Freddie Mercury announced to the press that he was suffering from AIDS. He died the next day in his London apartment, surrounded by his relatives. In April 1992, a huge charitable concert in tribute to Freddie was scheduled in Wembley. Dozens of bands take part in it, including Metallica, which is the first part with Guns N Roses, Extreme and Def Leppard. There are also other big names of music such as Zucchero, Tony Iommi, Seal, David Bowie, George Michael, U2, Robert Plant or Liza Minnelli. Mango Groove plays live from home in South Africa and the performance is broadcast via satellite in Wembley. Tens of thousands of people watch this concert live on television. It is considered the biggest Rock concert with a charitable purpose in history. In 1995, Queen's last album, Made In Heaven, was released despite Freddie's disappearance four years earlier. May and Taylor decided to continue the adventure, with less credibility, first in 2004, by taking over the services of Paul Rogers ( Bad Company, Free ). They rename their super band Queen+Paul Rodgers , shoot around the world and produce an album, The Cosmos Rocks , in 2008. Then Brian and Taylor offered the position of singer to several people, including Adam Lambert and Robbie Williams. For many fans, May and Taylor lose all credibility because this line-up seems to be a profit business more than anything else. John Deacon, who retired after the release of Made In Heaven to look after his family, did not even want to hear about the Queen "post Freddie Mercury". He will even say after Taylor, May and Robbie Williams recorded a new version of We Are The Champions: "It's one of the most important songs in history, but I think they ruined it. I don't want to be mean, but let's just say Robbie Williams isn't Freddie Mercury. Freddie cannot be replaced, and certainly not by him! The evidence that the Queen without Freddie Mercury is far from unanimous. The three musicians, however, remained friends. Queen will have marked the history of music forever. He was the forerunner of large-scale concerts and helped to promote this style of event. He is the band that stayed the longest in the British charts, a total of 1322 weeks (over 25 years) and far ahead of the greatest ones like The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley. It is even estimated that the band would have sold between 150 and 200 million albums worldwide (some even advance 300 million), making Queen one of the bands that sold most albums in the record industry's history. The English are also a major influence of rock/metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Guns N Roses, Mötley Crüe, Anthrax, Dream Theater, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Kansas, Journey, Red Hot Chili Peppers or Foo Fighters. Finally, Queen is regularly cited as a major influence of the old or later Pop from George Michael to Lady Gaga (who derives her name from the song Radio Ga Ga), from Katy Perry to Elton John to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, with whom Freddie maintained mutual friendship and admiration. They also recorded some songs together.
