Rainbow
Biography
Rainbow (also known as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow) is a band from Hard Rock founded by British guitarist Ritchie Blackmore in 1975, just leaving Deep Purple. He is joined by members of the American band Elf for the recording of a first eponymous album, but only the singer Ronnie James Dio will remain in the longer term. Rainbow's musicians have changed many times over the years (never two studio albums are made with the same line-up), a fact that is generally attributed to Blackmore's temperament. It is with bassist Jimmy Bain (which will later be found at Thin Lizzy and Dio, among others), drummer Cozy Powell (who later worked with Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and Yngwie Malmsteen) and keyboardist Tony Carey who released the cult album Rising (1976) and live On Stage (1977). Long Live Rock 'N' Roll , in 1978, was the last participation of Ronnie James Dio, who joined Black Sabbath the following year before setting up his own band. 1979 saw the arrival of bass player Roger Glover (who has already met Blackmore in Deep Purple), keyboardist Don Airey (now with Deep Purple) and singer Graham Bonnet. That same year appeared Down To Earth, before a new change of singer in 1980 took place. It was Joe Lynn Turner who resumed the microphone for the following three albums, until the reformation of Deep Purple in 1984 (which joined Blackmore and Glover) and thus the separation of Rainbow. The return was in 1993 when the guitarist left Deep Purple for the second time. For the occasion, the line-up is completely renewed. Stranger In Us All was released in 1995, now the band's last opus, which split in 1997 in favour of Blackmore's Night. A new Rainbow reformation takes place in 2015 for a few concerts. Ritchie Blackmore then surrounded himself with Ronnie Romero (song), David Keith (Blackmore's Night , drums), Bob Nouveau (bass) and Jens Johansson ( Stratovarius , ex- Dio , ex- Yngwie Malmsteen , keyboards). New titles are apparently under preparation.
