Biography

Rolo Tomassi - name from the film L.A. Confidential - was born in 2005 near Sheffield, England. Hard to classify by its multiple influences, the band's music evolves in a mathcore, post-hardcore or experimental rock register, mixing complex math-rock riffs, chaotic or jazzy breaks, keyboard melodies and shouting/singing female voices. The original line-up consists of Eva Spence, James Spence (brother and sister, singing and keyboard/song respectively), Edward Dutton (drums), Joseph Thorpe (bass) and Joe Nicholson (guitar). In 2005, a demo produced on an independent label was released and the band signed with Holy Roar Records and released an EP Self-Titled in 2006. In 2008 they played at the Download Festival and released a few months later their first Hysterics album laying the foundations of their experimental mathcore/grindcore. After a series of singles, including a split with Throats in 2009, the band left for the United States to record its second album. Cosmology was released in 2010, with a good reception from critics, allowing them to acquire a wider audience, notably on tour in the UK alongside Dillinger Escape Plan. In 2011 Eternal Youth released, a compilation of new, rare and remixed tracks. It was the following year that the band saw Joe Nicholson and Joseph Thorpe leave, who would be replaced by Chris Cayford ( No Coast ) and Nathan Fairweather ( Brontide ). The third studio album Astraea was released in 2012 with this new line-up on Destination Moon , the band's label. The album is more direct, less ambiguous and presents a more thoughtful image than previous records, continuing the logical progression of the band. It was at this time that drummer Edward Dutton left the formation, replaced by Tom Pitts. Under this new line-up, they record their fourth album Grievances , released in 2015 on Holy Roar Records , an opus pushing further the progressive and experimental side with many atmospheric passages and interludes to the piano, giving this opus a finished and dark look.
