Biography
Stormtroopers Of Death better known as S.O.D. is an American crossover band formed in New York in 1985. They are known as one of the first formations to merge Hardcore/Punk with Thrash, giving birth to Crossover. S.O.D. is also known for bringing together leading members such as Scott Ian (guitars) and Charlie Benante (battery) of Anthrax as well as the famous bassist of Brutal Truth Dan Lilker.
After finishing his guitar tracks on the album of Anthrax Speaking The Disease, Scott Ian drew images of a character known as "Sargent D. " The images were accompanied by slogans such as "I Ian developed lyrics about the character and decided to form a group based on Sargent D, he then surrounded Charlie Benante, Dan Lilker, and Billy Milano of Psychos. After recording a demo of 63 tracks called Crab Society S.O.D . releases L'album, Speak English or Die . It was recorded and mixed over three days and became a historical album, pioneer of the Crossover style. He followed a tour with Motörhead and The Plasmatics, among others. At the end of this tour the band is put in stand-by, Lilker starts playing with Nuclear Assault, while Benante and Ian continue the adventure with Anthrax. Milano formed a kind of S.O.D. spin-off with M.O.D. (Method of Destruction). Their first album also highlights several lyrics written by Ian Scott, as well as a modified version of "Aren S.O.D. is reforming for a concert unique in New York in 1992, which was recorded and edited as Live at Budokan. This live feature features most of the titles of Speak English or Die, and some demo songs as well as covers of Ministry (Stigmata), Nirvana (Territorial Pissings) and Fear. In 1997, S.O.D. met again to play Milwaukee Metal Fest. Their first European concert takes place at the With Full Force festival in Germany. In 1999, a second studio album was released Bigger Than the Devil and the band toured the late 1990s. In 2001, the DVD Speak English or Live appeared, there is the bonus live at Budokan in original video, plus the concert of a festival in Germany and rare images of live titles recorded in Japan. These will be included in the reissue of Speak English or Die , with two new songs recorded in the studio to celebrate the million copies sold. In 2002, Kill Yourself: The Movie released on DVD. In 2003 the group split up due to disagreements between Ian and Milano. In 2007, however, S.O.D. reformed and released its third album, Rise of the Infidels. The album is not really an album since it consists of previously unrecorded tracks and live. Milano says the album would be the band's will.
S.O.D. has been the source of many controversies because of deliberately racist and misogynistic words. Bassist Dan Lilker says: "Speech has never been meant to hurt anyone, it's just a way to target certain problems and get people upset."
