Secret Chiefs 3
Biography
Secret Chiefs 3 , no it's not M6's latest culinary show, nor is it a codename of the U.S. Ministry of Defence. Secret Chiefs 3 is an experimental music band, with a strong inclination for savagery and anything atmospheric. A kind of radioactive floating bin floating on the ocean of general compliance for some, a small jewel of inventiveness for others. At the base side-project of Trey Spruance (guitarist of Mr Bungle among others) originally composed solely of members of the late Mr Bungle, the composition will evolve over time and the band will become more a community project than a traditional music group: each will bring his personal touch, his influences and his madness. A sort of tentacular musical laboratory, this is how we could qualify this project, initiated in 1995 and which has already released about ten albums over the last 10 years, with prestigious guests like Matt Chamberlain, Trevor Dunn or John Zorn and of course Mike Patton. Today there's only Trey Spruance left with the controllers, he and his hallucinating list of instruments practiced. The name Secret Chiefs 3 is in fact a general name for a whole tripotée of groups or side-projects related almost always involving Trey Spruance and its overflowing creativity, one can name seven other groups affiliated with Secret Chiefs 3: The Electromagnetic Azoth, UR, Ishraqiyun, Traditionalists, Holy Vehm, FORMS, and NT Fan. On the programme of this rotten pot of artists: surf rock, crash, Persian (many) Arab and Indian influences, death metal, film BO and a little electro. Intriguing, isn't it?
