Biography

Sentenced started in 1989 in Oulu, Finland, at the initiative of Miika Tenkula (Guitare / Chant), Sami Lopakka (Guitare), Vesa Ranta (Batterie) and Lari Kylmänen (Basse). At the time, the band played pure Death Metal with a first demo titled When Death Join Us... in 1990. Sentenced then hired singer and bassist Taneli Jarva after Lari left and the band signed a contract with a French record company that allowed them to record their first album Shadows Of The Past , released in 1992 at Thrash Records. In 1993, Sentenced changed its label and landed at Spinefarm Records, which took care of the release of their second album North From He re, closer to the Death Metal movement in the Gothic style of Dark Tranquility and In Flames. 1994 marks their arrival on another record company, Century Media Records. It is with her that the third disc, Amok, is born. More and more melodic and melancholic, Sentenced is in the process of tracing his own musical path. After the ep Love&Death, 1996 saw the departure of singer/bassist Taneli Jarva who was not able to cope with the pressure from the success of the band. The band then recruited the singer Ville Laihiala, who strongly influenced the new album of the band Down which was released the same year at Century Media Records. Down is elected album of the month in some German magazines like Rock Hard and Metal Hammer. Sentenced then toured Europe, North America and Japan. Success is even greater than before. In 1998, the band joined the services of Sami Kukkohovi (Basse - Kypck ) for the recording of the future album and Sentenced delivers a superb performance with his fifth effort, Frozen , even more tormented than his predecessors. The band seems to have found its way. Crimson seems to be moving away in 2000. But in 2002, The Cold White Light broke the nail planted by Frozen. Highly emotional, energetic, this album wins all the votes. 2005 unfortunately marks the end of the band's career with The Funeral Album, which was awarded three Finnish Metal Awards. In October 2015, for the last concert of the band at their home in Oulu, Taneli Jarv joined the band to sing former tracks from records such as North From Here, Amok, and Love And Death. Guitarist Miika Tenkula died of a heart attack on 18 February 2009.
