Biography

Sepultura was founded in 1984 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil by the brothers Cavalera, Max and Igor, aged 15 and 14. Passionate about music, but also very marked by the brutal death of their father, the brothers soon stopped their education and invested heavily in this project despite their young age. One of the very first formations consists of: Wagner Lamounier with singing, bassist Paulo Jr. (a childhood friend), Max Cavalera with guitar and Igor Cavalera with drums. Wagner Lamounier quickly left Sepultura to form Sarcofago . After his departure, Max decided to ensure the singing despite and was replaced by Jairo Guedes on guitar. In 1985, Sepultura participated in a few local festivals and was noticed by a city disquaire, which offered members the opportunity to perform a recording session of eight titles in the studio. Shortly afterwards, the band joined the label created by this studio: Cogumelo Records . The latter, being a leading player in the production of Heavy Metal in Brazil and producing the first two records of Sepultura. Their first EP, Bestial Devastation , is recorded in a modest studio in two days. In his first press, Bestial Devastation is released on a split album whose second face is reserved for another Brazilian band, Overdose . Despite a mediocre sound, due to the excessive saturation of the amps, the record allowed the band to become known in Brazil and record Morbid Visions in 1986. Their fame was limited to their country of origin, but their first part of Venom's performance at a concert in Belo Horizonte helped to make them noticed. The members of Sepultura then decided to move to São Paulo in order to benefit from better working conditions. Sepultura is one of the first Brazilian groups to embark on the Metal Extreme adventure in the company of Sarcofago, the two formations have long maintained a rivalry. Jairo Guedez left the band after the first tour in 1987. He is replaced by Andreas Kisser, the more experienced one brings his know-how and contributes greatly to the evolution of the style of the band in his new album, Schizophrenia , the first to be recorded under professional conditions. For a few months, the band performed concerts with at least 2,000 people and released 10,000 copies of the album, more than those of major foreign bands such as Slayer or Anthrax, Sepultura became the leader of the Brazilian Extreme scene. In 1988, Max Cavalera after making some contacts during concerts decided to go to the United States to meet producers. Sepultura then draws the attention of Roadrunner Records, one of the world's most important metal labels (at that time) and major importer of foreign groups. Monte Conner, the artistic director meets them and decides to offer them a long-term contract in order to market Schizophrenia on a larger scale, even before seeing the band play. The album Beneath the Remains is recorded in nine nights (in order to benefit from more advantageous rates) in Rio de Janeiro and the members of Sepultura, not mastering English, must contact their new producer Scott Burns (world renowned producer who worked with Cannibal Corps and other cult groups) by translator. However, he announced the beginning of the true success of Sepultura outside Brazil by allowing him to make his first world tour, mainly in Europe and North America. During their dates in Europe, Sepultura is frequently demanded by the public to the point of shortening the concert of the previous group. In 1990 the group moved to Phoenix, USA and hired a new management team. In January 1991, the Beneath the Remains album ended with a concert at the Rock in Rio festival, in front of more than 100,000 people. These participations in major festivals give the group the opportunity to perform alongside the artists who inspired it, such as Metallica or Kreator . In the course of 1990, they recorded their new album, Arise , at Morrisound studios in Tampa, Florida. Released in April 1991, the record made Sepultura one of the Death / Thrash Metal bands then among the most chronic in the specialized press. The eponymous song and another single, Dead Embryonic Cells. The members of the group hired Gloria Bujnowski as manager and settled permanently in Arizona. Arise allows the band to establish its reputation and make a world tour of more than two years during which it plays twice in a closed-door stadium in Indonesia, and performs the first part of Megadeth and Guns N' Roses at the Rock in Rio festival. This international success serves as a model for many groups from countries where the Metal scene has little media visibility. In 1992, Arise's success led the band to play first part on two major tours: Helmet and Ministry, as well as Alice In Chains and Ozzy Osbourne. During this period Max Cavalera married Sepultura's manager, Gloria Bujnowski, almost twice her eldest. In 1993 Chaos A.D , the fifth album by Sepultura , was released, the texts of which are more social and whistleblower, especially concerning Brazil. This committed record reaches 32nd place on Billboard 200, a rare album by Metal. In 1996 it was the peak of popularity with the album Roots that ran to more than 1,200 000 copies. Partly recorded during a visit to a reserve of Xavantes Indians, in Mato Grosso, the album marks one of the band's first collaborations with another artist: percussionist Carlinhos Brown performs on several tracks. The band then played at the world's largest festivals, such as Pinkpop in the Netherlands. In addition, Sepultura performed Roots Bloody Roots and Ratamahatta on Canal + Nowhere else, and played at the Zenith in Paris. In 1996, Sepultura again gave a concert at Castle Donington's Monsters of Rock Festival, in England alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Paradise Lost and Fear Factory. Having learned a few hours before the death of his son-in-law, Dana Wells, in a car accident, Max Cavalera took the first flight to the United States, forcing guitarist Andreas Kisser to provide vocal parts at the concert. The deceased's mother is Gloria Bujnowski, wife of Max Cavalera since 1992 and manager of the group. Broken by this death, tensions appear during the tour of the Roots album. Following these events Kisser and Paulo Jr, do not want to renew Gloria Bujnowski's contract and try to convince the two Cavalera brothers to change management. On December 16, 1996, after a concert at the Brixton Academy in London, the singer considered himself betrayed and formalized his departure in early 1997. Max Cavalera created his new band Soulfly a few months later. This is undoubtedly the decisive turning point in Sepultura's career. After Max Cavalera's departure the audience feared a definitive separation of the band but all members commonly expressed the will to continue playing together. After extensive research, the band chose Derrick Green as a new singer from Cleveland, Ohio, from the Hardcore scene. However, Against , first opus with Derrick Green singing, is rather badly received by fans and critics especially because of the vocal difference with Max Cavalera. This album thus achieves a much weaker commercial success than its two predecessors, and sells twice as many copies as Soulfly's first album. The band's eighth studio album, Nation, was released in 2001 in which a collaboration with the band of cellists Apocalyptica, In 2003 is produced Revolusongs , an EP album that bears witness to the eclecticism of the band: it is indeed composed of eight covers of groups as diverse as Massive Attack , U2 , Hellhammer or the hip-hop band Public Enemy . That same year, and against the band's will, Roadrunner Records marketed Sepultura's latest live with Max Cavalera, recorded in 1996 at the Brixton Academy in London and titled Under a Pale Grey Sky. Released in 2003, Roorback is the ninth studio album and first produced by SPV Records. Despite a rather favourable criticism, sales remain low. Sepultura played in 2005 at the Dubai Desert Rock Festival, and released a live DVD in November 2005 entitled Live In São Paulo. The band is particularly interested in performing in countries where the Metal scene is poorly developed, such as New Zealand or Indonesia. The tenth studio album is an album-concept inspired by Divine Comedy and titled Dante XXI , released on March 14, 2006. Two videos are recorded: Convicted in Life and Ostia. On January 26, 2009, the band released its eleventh studio album, entitled A-Lex . New concept album, inspired by Anthony Burgess' novel The Mechanical Orange, it is the first to be realized without the collaboration of at least one of the two Cavalera brothers. The recording took place in late 2008 at the Trama studios in São Paulo. The band plays some songs from this new album in the first part of two Metallica concerts at the Cícero Pompeu Stadium in Toledo, São Paulo, on 20 and 21 January 2010, in front of a total of 100,000 people. In addition, on June 20, 2010, Sepultura became the first professional metal band to perform on Réunion Island. On July 6, 2011, Sepultura announced that it had signed a contract with the German metal label Nuclear Blast , with the release of an album in 2011. At the end of 2010, members produced new songs and entered the studio in Brazil to record the album, under the direction of producer Roy Z, who had collaborated with Judas Priest and Bruce Dickinson of the Iron Maiden group. On March 1, the album, named Kairos, was released in June 2011. The album includes covers of Ministry ( One More Fix ) and The Prodigy ( Firestarter ), each available in a bonus edition. Sepultura made a world tour, entitled Kairos World Tour, during which the band played at the Wacken Open Air, the Colmar Wine Fair or the Rock in Rio Festival, with the Bronx Drums. The South American tour was with Machine Head. The original band remains today only bassist Paulo Jr who played in all albums. The last member in the group's current formation is drummer Eloy Casagrande, a young prodigy only twenty years old. The band's thirteenth album, The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart , was released on 25 October 2013 in Europe and 29 October in the United States. Launched on a cruise rhythm, Sepultura continues in 2017 with Machine Messiah , and we will wait only three years before seeing Quadra , fifteenth long format Brazilians land.
