Shape Of Despair
Biography
Founded in the winter of 1995, by the two guitarists death Jarno Salomaa, leader of the band, and Tomi Ullgren, Shape Of Despair is one of the essential bands of the Finnish doom. Far from the classicism of a Bizarre Reverend , the formation evolves rather in a funeral doom registry rich in desperate atmospheres and filled with dreams. Originally, the band was called Raven and recorded a first demo under this name in 1998, Alone In The Mist , with Azhemin as singer of Thy Serpent , and T.M. behind the drums. It was at the same time that Nathalie S. joined the group and offered her the angelic voice that still made her beautiful days. In September of the same year Raven changed his name to Shape Of Despair . At the release of Shades Of, their first album, in 2000, the band received the reinforcement of Samu Ruotsalainen, the drummer of Finntroll, and T.M. went on to sing growl. Their languishing music, carried by synthesizers who create superb vaporous and melancholic atmospheres, opens the door to success. In 2001, Angels Of Distress broke the nail with the contribution of the violin of Toni Raehalme and a very successful marriage between the voices of Nathalie and Pasi Koskinen (ex-Amorphis , Ajattara ), whose growl is wonderful. In 2004, the great adventure continued with a new album, Illusion's Play, more atmospheric, on which we find at bass, Sami Uusitalo de Finntroll . With a line-up finally stabilized, Shape Of Despair should still surprise in the coming years. Very active, the Finns will successively release an eponymous album in 2005, Written in my Scars in 2010, a split in 2011, before returning in 2015 with the sublime Monotony Fields, pushing a little further the limits of melancholy.
