She And Him

She&Him is a folk duo created in 2006 by Zooey Deschanel (song, piano, ukulele) and Matthew Ward (guitar, production), accompanied by regular session musicians: Rachel Blumberg (battery), Mike Mogis (pedal steel guitar), Mike Coykendall (bass, guitar). It all started on the shooting of The Go-Getter (it was during the presentation of the film at the Sundance festival that the duo later made her first stage appearance), in which she played and for which she composed the BO, but mainly thanks to the director of the film who asked them to record a duo for the ending credits (When I Get To The Border a cover by Linda and Richard Thompson). Matthew who had already heard Zooey sing in the film Elf and was surprised to learn on this occasion that she composed her own songs without having tried to get into music. Shortly afterwards, she decided to send him several demos of her compositions. He was immediately conquered and they decided to create She & Him. The compositional work of the first opus soberly entitled Volume One , was particular because of their places of residence: she lives in Los Angeles, Portland, but also because of uncompatible jobs of time, the correspondence was therefore largely by email. Zooey's compositions are strongly influenced by life in Los Angeles but also by the long journeys on the cotierre roads to listen to Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys) and other artists of the 1960s and 1970s. The Californian scene also greatly influenced Matthew in his production work. The album was released in March 2008 and will be followed during the summer of a few concert dates. Two years later, after being each consecrated to their musical and cinematographic projects, She & Him returned with a second album ( Volume Two ), much in the same vein as the first. There are two times Ridin In My Car by NRBQ and Gonna Get Along With You Now by Patience And Prudence, as well as a co-laboration with Tilly And The Wall on the title In The Sun. After a tour of American festivals (South by Southwest, Coachella...), the band made a European tour with bands like Broken Social Scene, Jeff Tweedy and Build To Spill. More recently, the duo released A Very She & Him Christmas in October 2011, an album of covers of songs by Noel (Christmas Day by Brian Wilson , Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas by Judy Garland or Baby, Frank Loesser it is Cold Outside ...)
