Biography

Nivek Ogre - cEvin Key song - Mark Walk programming
Influenced by the pioneering industrial formations of Throbbing Gristle , Cabaret Voltaire or Suicide , Skinny Puppy was born in 1982 in Vancouver. Originally composed of cEvin Key (alias Kevin Crompton), drummer of Images in Vogue and Nivek Ogre (alias Kevin Ogilvie), it was under this formation that the band recorded Back & Forth, first demo cassette, followed by the first ep Remission. In 1985, Key and Ogre were joined by Wilhelm Schroeder, who took part in the recording of the first album Bites before giving his place to Dwayne Goettel. The band's arrival led the band in a fusion of industrial, Gothic and electronic music that found a first result on Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse , Cleanse, Fold and Manipulate and VIVIsectVI , respectively released in 1986, 1987 and 1988. The end of the nighties and the beginning of the nineties are synonymous with associations of all kinds for the members of Skinny Puppy . Ogre participates in the Pigface project with his colleague Alan Jourgensen, responsible for the production of Rabies in 1989, Key partners with Edward Ka-Spel ( Legendary Pink Dots) to record the album Their Eyes Slowly Burning under the surname of Tear Garden, before working with Alan Nelson on the Hilt project. It was also at that time that the gap was widening between the members of the group, Goettel and Key reproaching Ogre for his lack of investment in Skinny Puppy and his penchant for drugs. Whatever, the Canadian band signed to American Recordings in 1993 and moved to Los Angeles. The recording sessions of The Process prove to be a disaster. For the first time in ten years, David Ogilvie did not offend behind the controls, the group having set its course on Roli Mosiman (Swans) and Martin Atkins ( Pigface , Ministry ...). The problems pile up and, after several months of Key and Goettel galleys, dissatisfied with Atkins' work, return to Vancouver the master under his arm to try to save what can still be. Without Ogre, however, remained in California and at the same time announced his departure from Skinny Puppy to devote himself to his solo project, W.E.L.T. A few months later Goettel died in his parents' home, a victim of an overdose of heroin. In tribute, Ogre and Key will make it a point of honour to finish the recording of The Process, which will finally be released in 1996.
Skinny Puppy was thought dead and buried when in 2000 Key and Ogre, apparently reconciled, reactivate the band at the Dresden festival and start recording again. To celebrate the meeting, the label of Key edited Puppy Gristle , on which we find a joint performance between Skinny Puppy and Genesis P-Orridge (Thobbing Gristle , Psychic TV ), dated 1994. A year later, the Canadians signed at SPV, recording in the Greater Wrong of the Right with members of Static-X, Tool and Collide, followed in 2007 by Mythmaker.
