Sleep
Biography
It was in the late 1980s in San José, California that the band Asbestos Death formed around Chris Hakius (Batterie), Al Cisnesros (Basse / Chant), and Tom Choi (Guitare). Influenced by Black Sabbath or Saint Vitus, the trio was joined a little later by a second guitarist, Matt Pike, and recorded various demos. Choi being on the start, he will be effectively replaced by Justin Marler. But with its arrival, the training also opts for a name change, and then moves on to Sleep . Marked by the Californian independent label Tupelo, Sleep gave birth in 1991 to its first album, Volume 1, which includes various compositions from the time of Asbestos Death. Following the release of an ep, Vol 2 , the following year, Justin Marler took the distance and radically adopted the monastic lifestyle. Unstabilized by the situation, the three competitors still work on their second album and sign even at Earache Records, the label emerging at the time. Sleep's Holy Mountain was released in 1993 and hit a big blow in the early Stoner scene because of the successful incorporation of Doom elements. In addition to its founding character, this record also marks the first collaboration between the band and producer Billy Anderson, and will allow it to shoot with sizes like Cathedral and Hawkwind. Sleep then signs on London Records, a label that relies heavily on its foals by advancing substantial sums that the group spends heavily on Green Matamp and marijuana amps. With the help of Billy Anderson again, the Americans are planning to record a single 63-minute album. London Records opposes them, however, an end to not receiving it when listening to Dopesmoker, and therefore categorically refuses to release it. Disappointed by this stinging failure, Sleep members decided purely and simply to end the group. But history doesn't stop there. Through its label Rise Above Records, Lee Dorian (Cathedral) gives way to the pressure of fans and decides to release a version of the ten-minute truncated record, split into six tracks, and renamed Jerusalem. Sleep's legend is only stronger in front of this performance, but its former members did not rest on their laurels. Matt Pike reconnects with his metal roots by founding High On Fire, while Chris Hakius rides The Sabians with Justin Marler who had just quit. A last rebound occurred in 2003 at the initiative of Tee Pee Records, thanks to this final album of Sleep , since Domesmoker is finally republished in its original version. He also benefits from a blend reviewed and corrected by Billy Anderson and a live title as a bonus. As for Al Cisneros, he finally decided to leave his musical retreat in 2005, and chose to reincarnate Sleep's soul by forming the OM mystic with Chris Hakius.
