Spiritus Mortis

Formed: 1987
Styles: Traditional Doom Metal

Biography

It all started in 1987 when the brothers Teemu (bass/song) and Jussi (guitar) Maijala decided to establish a Doom group, the first of Finland according to their own claims. They opt for the surname of Rigor Mortis , but must quickly change for Spiritus Mortis because of the American group of the same name. They sailed with them VP Rapo (beater), who was to be only a temporary member, but eventually became the permanent drummer of the formation. It should be noted that the search for a true singer, desired by Teemu who wants to concentrate on his bass game, will only be successful in 1997 with the arrival of Tomi Murtomäki. Unfortunately, the band did not take off despite a number of demos recorded during the 1990s, the fault of many things, especially because of the lack of time of its members and the absence of an audience as a real scene for the Doom Metal in Finland. Finally, luck ends up turning at the dawn of the new millennium, with critics finally making themselves positive, partly thanks to the arrival of a new singer, Vesa Lampi. After two new demos enthusiastically hosted by the local scene, Spiritus Mortis is offered a deal, but things are falling apart and the deal is buried. The band did not disunite, however, and decided in 2003 to enter the studio to record some tracks, without knowing whether any label would be interested. Rage of Achilles manifests itself, and the contract is quickly signed. With this unexpected support, the band recorded its first eponymous album, released in 2004. But the spell stings on the band, which, after having had to change twice drummer in three years, sees its label throw sponge and disappear. With the help of Tom Phillips ( While Heaven Wept ), Spiritus Mortis ended up getting a deal at Black Lotus Records, and a second opus, called Fallen , was quickly on the track for a release in 2006. But doom upon them, literally, since again, the band is confronted with the fall of its label and the departure of one of its members. The band still embarks on its first long tour on the occasion of its twenty years of career, with a renewed label. It also takes time to record a split with The Gates of Slumber, then another with Witchtiger, but also to participate in many compilations. In 2009, Sami Hynninen, a.k.a. Albert Witchfinder of Reverend Bizarre, joined the band and participated in the new album, The God Behind the God, released the same year, followed by a split with Fall of the Idols. Line-up : Sami Hynninen – (song) Jussi Maijala – (guitar) Kari Lavila – (guitar) Teemu Maijala – (bass) Jarkko Seppälä (battery)
